Seek Shade

Canopies work well in backyard design because they are simple to set up and convenient to store, which is especially helpful for transporting them on vacation. A canopy will provide shade for any number of backyard activities, including outdoor crafts, a picnic, play dates, and even weddings. They also offer protection for tents set up for a kids’ sleepover, help shield backyard furniture from the elements, and offer a reprieve from hot summer days. Recline on your chaise or relax in a hammock and enjoy the warm weather without getting sunburned.

Discover Your Green Thumb

Landscaping is a great way to improve the look of your property and will help increase its resale value. Consider starting small with beautiful plants that also bloom, like hostas. Pots or hanging baskets of freesia or delphinium will add bright pops of color along a walkway or doorway. An inviting arrangement of blooming plants will be good for starting conversation with party guests, even those who have yet to try their hand at gardening.

Think Big

Additional landscaping options include installing larger fixtures, such as a fountain, hot tub, or even a backyard deck. Aesthetically pleasing elements like a small pond or wrought iron benches surrounded by a variety of greenery and flowers will soothe you and anyone who visits your home. Turn your backyard into a sanctuary for relaxation, meditation, or both.

A Fresh Look

Buying a new set of patio furniture can be costly. Rather than starting over completely, add a little zing to an existing design by recovering seat cushions in a new fabric. Peruse thrift stores and yard sales for furniture that could use a little TLC and then bring out its natural beauty with a couple coats of spray paint. Hit clearance or end-of-season sales for outdoor dinnerware, an iced tea serving set, or throw pillows for a wicker couch.

Improving upon the existing design in your backyard doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. A few light touches can really bring out the beauty in a backyard without causing too much strain on the wallet. Start small and see where your beautification efforts take you.
