We are building a new family room (and a basement room underneath it) and I'd love to have an ash pit that runs from a new woodburning f'place (we haven't picked one yet) to the basement, but I'm told that no prefab fireplaces are set up to accommodate an ash pit. My fear is that a full masonry fireplace would totally bust my budget. Is there a solution, and one that wouldn't run afoul of big city municipal code requirements? Thanks.

I am looking for a rod to open and close the damper on a 1930's era brick fireplace. I want to buy or make one but have very little idea what it would look like. Assistance appreciated.
