We had a cedar deck that lasted only five years before it became too unsightly to keep. With the cost of a deck, we grew tired of the prospect of repeating the same mistake with wood or risk it with composites, and instead opted for an Evolutiondeck paverdeck. This is truly a no-maintenance deck option and has been bullet-proof.

I agree with Chris - composite planks are actually less likely to warp than real wood. Composite decking is now so durable some manufacturers are offering up to 20-year warranties. As Chris mentioned, it requires substantially less maintenance as well.

Disadvantages of Composite Deck Materials:
It's foolish to say that composite decks last "Probably" only 5-10. Composite decking may show signs of wear in heavy traffic areas, and minimal color fading and yes, scratches may occur. But properly installed boards will not warp! Wood will warp before composite. With little maintenance you can get many years of splinter free, no nail-pop enjoyment. Composites that use Strandex technology, like Latitudes, do not take in or give off moisture, therefore very minial expansions and contraction occures compared to its wood counterpart. In addition, many composite boards are two sided, so if there is unusual wear simply flip the board over and reuse. Or just replace as needed. It's also important to note that you don't have annual staining or sealing rituals with composites like you do with lumber.
