This is a good article, but there are a few things I would like to add.

Abstract art is a good decorating tool because it is timeless - if it is done properly, you will never grow tired of looking at it, and it wall not become dated.

There are literally thousands of unknown abstract artists that do very good work, and are quite interested in selling a painting. They will negotiate.

You can often get these artists to paint something for you special, matching your tastes and color scheme.

As far as doing it yourself, that is not so easy. I often have discussions with other artists who are trying to do abstract, but are having a bad time getting it to work. Abstract art, although often lacking in imagery, still has a composition to it, and requires at least a basic knowledge of the rules of art. A non-artist may be able to make a picture that is passable, but the quality will always lack, and it will always be obvious that it was painted by and amateur.

The last thing is that there is nothing like an original painting to add class and distinction to a room. They are also much more interesting to look at because there is a texture to them from the brush strokes that is not usually evident in a print.

So, if you are interested in abstract art, take a look at websites that sell art of various artists, or at the website of an individual artist, and you should be able to find a bargain.
