A chandelier adds interest and charm to your dining room, but you can also use it to enhance the look of your entry. Learn what type, size and style chandelier works best for various applications in the home.

Adding a chandelier may be just what you need to bring sophistication, style or just plain fun to any room in your home.

Your dining room may simply not feel complete without a chandelier over the table.

If you’ve decided that a chandelier is the perfect accent to your dining room, kitchen, or any other room in your house, the next step is selecting the appropriate style.

When we hear the word “chandelier,” most of us probably think of a traditional crystal chandelier.

Crystal chandeliers can bring elegance and style to a room that is unlike any other fixture. This is where you should start your search if your living or dining room is somewhat formal.

An ornate crystal chandelier complements a deep mahogany dining set, while a more modern abode might be better suited by a smaller, pendant design. No matter what, if crystal chandeliers are your preference, this traditional fixture will offer a design to meet your desires.

Looking for something a little more adventurous? Try a wrought iron chandelier for a bold addition to your home. Wrought iron chandeliers offer a variety of finishes which can incorporate traditional styles into a more contemporary feel with cleaner lines, adding style without taking all the attention.

Wrought iron chandeliers are also perfect for a Mediterranean or South American style home. A wrought iron chandelier might also offer more flexibility than a traditional chandelier in certain rooms, and can be complimented very easily with a wall sconce or another light fixture.

Care to step out of the Old World altogether? If your design preferences are solely from the modern era, a contemporary chandelier might be more up your alley. Contemporary chandeliers offer the widest variety of styles to satisfy your design palette.

Perhaps try a contemporary chandelier that is simple, sleek, and geometric for your modern setting. If your living space cries out for a splash of color, there are plenty of contemporary chandeliers to fit the bill.

Remember, chandeliers are better suited for decoration than for providing light. You will be far better off choosing a chandelier with a design that captures your imagination, while bolstering your room’s ambient lighting with other sources, rather than purchasing a chandelier with a hundred lights in an attempt to light your room with a sole light source.

Ceiling lights are probably the most commonly used light fixtures in the home.

The reasons for this are clear: Ceiling lights come in a wide variety of styles to suit any room; they light a wide area, and they don’t take up valuable floor space.

Whether you are planning a new home or remodeling your existing home, you’ll want to plan ahead for adequate ceiling-mounted light fixtures since adding ceiling lighting is not an easy post-construction or retrofit project.

If you have existing ceiling fixtures, we have also provided an overview of the different types and styles available, along with simple instructions for replacing your ceiling lights.

Consider the following suggestions and options when selecting and installing new ceiling light fixtures.

Things to Consider When Selecting Ceiling Lights

The most important consideration when selecting ceiling lights is the level of brightness they’ll provide and how much of the room will be lit.

The most common mistake that people make is relying on a single ceiling light fixture in the middle of the room. This may not be a problem in the dining room, where low light can contribute to an elegant ambiance, but it’s not such a good idea in the kitchen where you’re likely to be handling knives and could cut off a finger if you can’t see what you’re doing.

You will also want sufficient light in the living room where you might want to curl up with the latest best-seller. Consider what tasks you’ll be doing in each room; task lighting might be in order. You can install multiple ceiling light fixtures, light strips, or supplement your fixtures with table lamps or floor models.

Also consider the size and design of your room. You want to make sure that the model you choose complements your style and doesn’t over- or under-whelm your room.

Ceiling Light Types

Ceiling light types range from the simplest designs to ornate versions that would set off any mansion. So what options are best for your rooms?

Bare bulb – Sure, you could go with a socket and a bare bulb. A plain hanging lamp will give off the most light, but the decorative element is zip.

Frosted globes – These come in plain and etched versions. Simple lights covered with frosted globes are probably best suited for hallways, workshops, or laundry rooms. For other areas in your home, try something with a little more design pop.

Chandeliers – Ornate chandeliers are great choices for formal dining rooms, and now more modern versions in metal or plastic are also available to coordinate with more contemporary dining areas too. A chandelier in the kitchen can also be an interesting design element. Another option is to put it in an entryway, particularly if you have a high ceiling.

Track lighting – Track lighting is growing in popularity. Individual fixtures are attached to a track on the ceiling, allowing the fixtures to be moved and positioned individually. You can select wide or narrow beam options depending on if you want to use them for area or task lighting.

Downlights – Downlights are ceiling-mounted lights that project light downward. They can be recessed into the ceiling or flush mounted (also called “surface mounted”). These lights tend to cast a very narrow beam of light, so consider using them for task lighting.

Ceiling Light Styles

Within each of the above light types, you can find a hanging lamp style that will best suit your home.

Traditional, craftsman, and contemporary models are just some of the examples available. For example, if you decide you want a chandelier, you could go for a vintage ceiling light model or an art deco ceiling light. Similarly, if you want a globe light, decide if you want a vintage ceiling light or an art deco ceiling light, or another style choice.

Also consider the finish that would best suit your room. Shiny metal finishes or plastics are best for modern rooms. Brushed metals are better for country or elegant styles.

A variety of metals are available, including brass, pewter, nickel, and chrome, so one option is to take a look at any metals already in the room and try to coordinate with them.

Simple Ceiling Light Installation Steps

To install a ceiling light, make sure you have the following equipment available:

Ladder

Pliers

Screwdrivers

Utility knife

Wire

Wire cutters

Wire nuts

Once your materials are assembled, follow these simple steps to install your fixture:

As with any electrical work, turn off the circuit breaker before you start.

Remove the old ceiling fixture. You will probably need to remove any globes or glass first, just like you were going to replace the bulb. You will need to remove a central rod or screws to take the fixture down. Hold on to the fixture so it doesn’t pull on the wires when you do this. Use your wire cutters to cut the wires on the fixture, not the house wires!

To prepare for installation, take out the leftover bits of fixture and grounding wire.

Review the instructions on your new fixture, as each model wires differently. Think about getting a helper if your fixture is particularly large.

Connect the fixture wire with wire nuts, and then do the same with the grounding wire. Push the wires into the electrical box so that they don’t tangle and they stay out of the way.

Place the fixture and secure it with a metal rod or screws as required by your model.

Too often overlooked, kitchen lighting increases functionality and adds style to your kitchen design. Our guide teaches you kitchen lighting design principles.

With today’s kitchen lighting options, it can be a daunting task to design your kitchen lighting system. Gone are the days of the seventies and eighties, when standard kitchen lighting was nothing but a recessed space in the ceiling with several fluorescent fixtures covered by cheap translucent plastic panels!

Unfortunately, kitchen lighting is still one of the most overlooked and easiest ways to change the look of your kitchen. Read on to learn how you can use modern lighting solutions to make your kitchen more stylish and functional.

First, it is important to understand the different types of kitchen lighting; overall ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. While most lighting fixtures are designed for use with specific bulb types and wattages, it is important to know the advantages and intended usage applications of each bulb before making your selection.

Overall Ambient Lighting

The most common kitchen lighting sources include incandescent, fluorescent and halogen type lamps. Incandescent lamps produce light by heating a very fine coil of tungsten wire filament using electrical current the filament is heated to more than degrees Fahrenheit, releasing visible light from the lamp.

Any of these three types can be used to provide overall ambient lighting in your kitchen, but choosing the right fixture is important. For ambient lighting, you want to use a diffused light source rather than a point source.

Recessed can light fixtures with wide flood bulbs work well for ambient lighting needs. You can also use fluorescent lamps in can fixtures to keep electric bills down. Other alternatives include more traditional recessed fixtures with translucent diffuser panels.

Using a phosphor powder coating, fluorescent bulbs contain argon and small amounts of mercury. When an electric charge is applied, the mercury inside the tube changes from a liquid form to a gas form. This causes ultraviolet light photons to be released and react with atoms of phosphor, producing white light within the human visible spectrum.

Fluorescent bulbs waste very little energy producing of heat, and can produce from 50 to 100 lumens per watt, whereas typical incandescent lamps produce versus only about 15 lumens per watt. Fluorescents are thus up to 4 to 6 times more efficient. Color temperature can be an issue with fluorescents, so be sure to look for warm or daylight temperature bulbs.

Task Lighting

Any area in your kitchen, where you work needs good task lighting. Whether it’s where you read your recipes, chop your vegetables or wash dishes, task lighting is essential to getting the job done properly.

Because task lighting is directed specifically at a certain area, you are not working in your own shadow, which is the problem with a single over head fixture in the room.

Use of recessed spotlights and floodlights has become very popular in recent years due to the style and range of options available. They are unobtrusive and provide great sources of all three types of light in a kitchen. Expense is higher since wiring and mounting labor is higher for installation in your ceiling.

If recessed lighting is not an option, another alternative for task lighting sources is to use track lighting. These have the added advantage that you can easily move and reconfigure lighting direction as desired.

Most recessed fixtures can provide lighting for specific functional work areas in your kitchen; islands, counter tops, sinks, ranges, eating areas, etc.

When combined correctly with ambient lighting sources including natural window light and diffused ceiling light sources, recessed or track lighting helps reduce unwanted shadows and gets light to areas you need the most light. Unless placed correctly, focus and spot lighting may cause unwanted dead and hot spots, so careful planning and placement is important.

Chances are, you will be installing multiple fixtures of many different types and styles throughout your new kitchen. Your ability to control each, both separately and in tandem, will prove critical if you are to create a flexible lighting environment.

Halogen bulbs are a very popular option for task lighting, due to their intensity and the variety of light focusing options available. Halogen bulbs are similar in nature to standard incandescent bulbs, except a lot more efficient and longer lasting. Standard incandescent lamps generate a lot of infrared heat which translates to energy inefficiency. Tungsten in the filament evaporates, leaving deposits inside the glass bulb, causing the filament to break and burn out the bulb.

In a halogen bulb, the tungsten filament is enveloped within a smaller gas-filled quartz tube. When heated, halogen and the evaporating tungsten atoms combine and the tungsten is re-deposited onto the filament. This enables longer lifespan and hotter temperatures, which produces more light output per energy unit.

Thus, Halogen lights can be much smaller than tungsten light sources yet still produce as much or even more light intensity! They are ideal for installation in very small places and will be less obtrusive to your kitchen design.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting helps creates a focal point in your kitchen, highlighting specific design elements. Typical accent lighting will include under and above cabinets, track lights and spot lights, aimed strategically to highlight cabinetry, artwork and other design elements.

Accent lighting fixtures include glass pendant lamps, rope lights, wall sconces and others. Pendant lamps over a kitchen island or bar also make great accent lighting sources, combining task and accent lighting in a single source. And with so many design and color choices, you will find pendant lamps to complement any kitchen decor, whether modern, country, retro or other style.

Accent lighting is a must for accentuating architectural details, beautiful works of art or pottery collections, or anything else you want to draw attention to. One great way to utilize accent lighting is above your kitchen cabinets.

If your kitchen cabinets do not go all the way to the ceiling, an inexpensive method for ambient lighting is to place Christmas rope lights above the cabinets. The fact that they are holiday lights will be hidden by the height and upper ‘lip’ of the cabinet, and it provides an excellent source of ambient lighting.

Dimmer Switches and Lighting Controls

Lighting controls need to be placed at kitchen entry and exit points, as well as at key work areas such as desk alcoves, islands, etc.

You may also want to consider incorporating one or more of the infrared remote control units that allow you to control your lighting much the same way as your entertainment components.

Timers and electronic sensors that turn lights on and off automatically are also seeing increased use in the kitchen. Before spending big bucks to go high tech, consider adding plain old dimmer switches, which have advanced greatly in recent years.

A dimmer switch works by turning electricity to the bulb on and off very rapidly, working off the alternating current, which cycles 60 time each second.

Less expensive than timers and remote control lighting solutions, dimmer switches control light intensity as you require for given tasks and desired mood lighting levels.

One tip to remember is that you don’t want to overload circuits so putting each type of lighting in your kitchen design on a separate circuit will help prevent problems with overloading.

Louis Comfort Tiffany table lamps are highly coveted collector items. Learn all about Tiffany lamps, the origins, design styles and reproduction Tiffany lamps.

Tiffany lamps were the creation of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848 to 1933), a brilliant American designer, best known for his work in stained glass.

Tiffany is most associated with the Aesthetic and Art Nouveau movements, and was affiliated with the Associated Artists, a collaborative group of designers that included Samuel Colman, Candace Wheeler, Lockwood de Forest and others.

Origins of Tiffany Lamps

Louis Tiffany was best known for his stained glass windows and lamps, ceramics, glass mosaics, blown glass pieces, enamels and metalwork.

A Tiffany style lamp will be recognized by the distinctive stained glass shade, made with pieces of stained glass soldered together using copper foil.

Associated with the Art Nouveau movement, original Tiffany lamps are one of the most important American contributions to the movement, which started in Europe during the late 19th century.

Designed around 1895 with a bronze base designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the first Tiffany lamp set an innovative and highly distinctive design aesthetic for table and floor lamps in the Art Nouveau style. Initially, Tiffany purchased many of the bases for his lamps from art pottery firms but most were cast in bronze.

Tiffany Lamp Design Patterns

Over the next twenty years, Tiffany designed various styles of lamps, of which there are seven primary categories, each defined by specific characteristics. These are the Irregular Upper and Lower Border, Favrile, Geometric, Transition to Flowers, Flowered Cone, and Flowered Globe groups.

Tiffany’s Irregular Upper and Lower Border lamps are distinguished by the openwork crown edge, which is meant to represent a branch, shrubbery or tree.

Meaning “handcrafted, the Favrile category includes the first lamps that Tiffany made with the Favrile stamp. The stamp was later replaced by Tiffany’s initials, which is one way collectors are able to determine the approximate date that a Tiffany Favrile lamp or other glass item was made.

In the geometric category, Tiffany designed lamp shades with small geometric shapes like rectangles, ovals, triangles and squares in the designs.

Later Tiffany introduced the Transition to Flowers group. This category can be further subdivided into the Flowered Cone and Globe lamp designs, with the difference being the shape of the lamp shade.

All of these table lamps and floor lamps are designed with nature or botanical themes. Tiffany commonly designed the lamp shades using natural forms like peacock feathers, spider webs, flowers, dragonflies and butterflies.

Tiffany Lamp Copper Foil Technique

Tiffany crafted his lamps using the Copper Foil method. The pattern for the lamp is first drawn on a piece of heavy cardboard. Numbers and glass colors are then written on the pattern pieces so that pieces are labeled correctly.

The glass is then laid over the pattern and carefully traced so that the pieces can be cut and grinded to the proper shapes. After thorough cleaning, the glass pieces are ready to apply the copper foil to the edges.

A copper foil solution is used to bond the glass pieces together, and then the pieces are soldered together firmly. After soldering is completed, the lamp is cleaned, giving it the final beauty and luminescent qualities intended in the design.

Original Tiffany Prices and Reproduction Lamps

Original tiffany lamps are highly coveted by collectors and the record price paid for an original one is more than $8 million USD! Smaller, less rare, original Tiffany table lamps can still be found in the range of $5,000 to $10,000 but original Tiffany floor lamps will be difficult to find under $20,000 today, and more rare models will generally be over $100,000.

While many of us will never be able to afford an original Tiffany glass table lamp, there are many reproduction lamps available on the market today, some of very high quality and can be good investments.

Many studios mass create Tiffany-style lamps using similar techniques to those of the original Tiffany Studios. With myriad glass colors and designs available in these handmade lamps, you will have fun selecting one that fits your home decor.

These reproduction table lamps will range in price from less than $100 for cheaper varieties, to well over $1,000 for heirloom handmade lamps in the more intricate design patterns.

Whether you purchase an original or heirloom quality Tiffany lamp on eBay or at an auction house or antique dealer, be sure you understand all the pertinent details and know its value.

A certificate of authenticity is recommended and you should only purchase original Tiffany pieces from a well established and trusted source. Knowing the provenance, or history of its owners, is even more important in order to be sure of its authenticity.

You will treasure the timeless beauty and quality of your Tiffany lamp for many years and it will be a focal point of your home decor admired by anybody who appreciates the artistry and superior craftsmanship of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Tiffany Studios.

Learn all about outdoor lighting options for your home; ambient, up & down lighting, moon lighting, LED, outdoor wall sconces, motion detectors & low voltage.

Outdoor lighting has really come along in the last ten years. It used to be that you had very few choices to brighten your home exterior. Now, you have myriad outdoor lighting options from which to choose.

Outdoor lighting for porches patios and decks has become one component in the overall lighting design of a home today. Lighting and landscape designers design the exterior lighting just as with the interior, using different types of lights for different effects and purposes.

The primary types and methods of outdoor lighting include ambient, down lighting, up lighting, diffused lighting, spot lighting, moon lighting and shadow lighting. Read along and learn about the various types of outdoor light fixtures available.

Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting is important in any space, meant to provide overall lighting coverage to a level that allows good human visibility. This type of lighting will generally be mounted on the exterior sides of your home, on light poles or out building structures and keeps you from, for instance, tripping over shrubberies when you go outdoors after dark!

Down Lighting
This light source is placed above any object or area desirable to enhance, such that a flood of light will be cast down onto the object or area. Normally, down lighting is intended to highlight a feature such as a sculpture, fountain or other outdoor decoration. It is also used for security purposes.

Up Lighting & Shadow Lighting
Up lights are used to highlight objects from below and are usually installed at ground level. Shadow lighting is used in front and below a plant or tree to cast dramatic patterns of light and shadow on a nearby wall.

Diffused Lighting
Creates a low intensity light level to highlight plants, shrubbery, or flower beds. It is diffused in order to spread light across a wide area.

Spot Lighting
Spot lights provide a beam of light to highlight and enhance a specific area or decorative element in the landscaping. Spot lighting is also very useful to enhance ambient light levels in areas like decks or stairs for better night time vision.

Moon Lighting
Like down lighting, moon lighting simply places the light source at an extremely high level, often in a tree or roof gable, to simulate the effect of moonlight shining down on your landscaping.

Lighting technology has also improved greatly in recent years. You can now get LED or solar lights that help to save energy, as well as intricate exterior lighting timers and dimmers to set your outdoor lighting levels for various settings and purposes; a setting for parties, one for romantic mood lighting, etc.

We have detailed a few examples of the outdoor lighting types and models you may want to explore further:

Exterior Metallic Wall Sconces
Mounted on exterior walls, these fixtures are available in a variety of materials such as aluminum, brass, copper and stainless steel. These will provide nice overall ambient lighting and, unlike some fixtures, can provide a nice decorative look to your home’s exterior during daylight too!

Outdoor Wall Lanterns
Typically used near a home’s exterior doors, these fixtures put the light on the ground beneath them and not wastefully up into the night sky or your neighbor’s yard. Available in a wide variety of designs, styles and finishes, you can spend a little or a lot depending on the overall quality, design and materials used.

LED Lighting
Recently, the use of LED technology outdoors has become popular and allows for low maintenance, with average lifespan of between 50,000 and 100,000 hours. LED lights use very little energy compared to their light output, which makes them quite economical. LED is also a very cool light source.

Low Voltage Landscape Lighting
Low voltage lighting fixtures are used to illuminate landscaping features, pathways and other areas that need diffused illumination. This will accentuate your landscape design for outdoor enjoyment and visually extend your home’s interior space at night.

Post Mount Lighting
If you really want to go all out with your exterior lighting design, these will give your yard or garden the feel of a city park and provide excellent ambient and down lighting.

Outdoor Hanging Light
Perfect for use in porches, gazebos and other outdoor covered spaced, hanging lamps add excellent ambient lighting to these commonly used gathering areas.

Motion Detectors
Excellent for security purposes and also improved energy efficiency in areas like driveways, a motion detector enables outdoor lighting fixtures to remain off until motion is sensed in the area the light covers.

Adding lighting to your garden enhances its beauty and functionality, allowing you to spend more time there and extending your home's interior outdoors at night.

The garden is one place in your home where you can express your creativity.

You can do this by improving and working on your garden’s landscape. The addition of lighting completes your landscaping, providing illumination for spending evenings outdoors and enhancing your property’s security.

The right flowering and ornamental plants for your garden should be used. You may also add a few structures to make your garden more pleasant-looking. Certain facilities where the family can stay and relax outside of their homes may also be added. During daytime, you can easily realize this.

But to make your gardens feel safe and relaxing even during nighttime, landscape lighting is essential. These outdoor lights will even accentuate the beauty of your garden landscapes.

A properly-lighted garden allows you to continue appreciating its beauty even at night. Landscape lights therefore not only provide security, they all showcase your garden’s beauty.

When using landscape lights, you must keep in mind of their dual function. Brighter outdoor lights would seemingly provide better security. The brighter your garden is, the more it deters unwanted company at night.

Outdoor lights however should not be too bright to spoil your garden’s scenic beauty. The brightness of landscape lights should just be enough to make the view of your garden relaxing. They should be soothing to the eyes. They must be sufficient enough though so that even passersby can appreciate your garden’s beauty.

To keep a balance between the security and aesthetic aspects of landscape lighting, certain factors must be considered.

First, outdoor lights should not take away people’s attention from the view itself. These lights should not become the view itself. These must be situated where they may be unseen or sparsely seen.

People’s attention should be on the view and not on the lights. These lights, however, may form part of your garden’s landscape if they complement the view. Thus, finding the right color, brightness and kind of lights for your garden is necessary. Otherwise, landscape lighting may end up irritating you and those around you.

The second consideration is that landscape lights should be properly located. Places in your garden where these will be kept from easily getting damaged should be chosen.

Landscape lights are out in the open and exposed to wind, rainfall and sunlight. This exposure usually affects the efficiency and functioning of these lights. It’s quite odd if an outdoor light which is supposed to protect you from harm is in itself unprotected from possible ruin.

Another issue concerning location is light’s attractiveness to insects at night. These tiny creatures will most likely bother you if your lights are not properly placed.

You should avoid putting these near places where you stay in your gardens. Instead of being relaxed, you’d get irritated once these insects start crawling on you. If you are entertaining visitors in your garden, the presence of insects becomes an embarrassment. These small flying, biting creatures will make your garden annoying even if it has a beautiful landscape and lighting.

Third, investing a little more on landscape lights that are energy-saving will in the end pay-off. A lot can be saved on electricity costs if lights shut down automatically during daytime.

You can also generate savings if your landscape lights are solar-powered. In addition, the use of rated and high-quality lights easily translates into savings as these have longer use.

A fourth consideration is that landscape lights should be durable and safe to use. These lights are exposed to natural occurrences such as rainfall. The use of durable lights can greatly lessen untoward incidents from happening.

Another aspect is that almost all outdoor lights run on electricity. Wiring should be properly installed to avoid accidents. The proper installation of wires may also prevent these from destroying your garden’s view. Outdoor lighting is supposed to protect you at night, and not to put you in danger.

Finally, only areas in your garden that needs to be showcased should be lighted. It would be a waste of precious energy if your entire garden is always brightened up.

Lighting up the whole garden might even take away people’s focus on what should only be viewed. This consideration, however, must not sacrifice your safety. What good will a beautiful garden landscape offer if you don’t even have a good sense of security in your own home.

Decorating is a very personal endeavor and creating your own unique style is hard work, but adding accents is like putting icing on the cake. And accent lighting can be one of the most visual elements in any home decor.

Wall sconces are an elegant and stylish accent lighting element. You can choose electric sconces if you are handy enough to do simple electrical projects or hire a local handyman or electrician to wire them for you. Or, choose candle wall sconces for no hassle installation and the natural feeling of candlelight.

Home interior sconces are available in many styles, shapes and colors. They add visual depth to any room and the warm glow on a wall can open up a room that may otherwise feel closed off and dark.

Not all home decorating ideas need to be elaborate and costly to be effective. Simple candle wall sconces can really big impact the overall look and feel of a room. Wall sconces can be found in may styles and materials, including metals like pewter, brushed nickel or wrought iron, or in many types of wood. Wrought iron is always a unique popular choice.

Wall art and paintings will be accented nicely if placed in the right relation to your home interior sconces. They also add depth to your ceilings since the light is directed upward in many designs, casting shadows and light in patterns.

You can hang wall sconces with little effort in just a few minutes time unless they are electric, in which case you may need to spend an hour. Most styles of wall sconces are very lightweight so drywall anchors, or nail placed on a wall stud will hold it in place. Many sconces will come with mounting hardware and instructions included.

Once you install your wall sconces, relax and see what a difference it makes to your room’s decor. Any living room, hallway, bedroom or den will feel warmer and more inviting when you flip the light switch or light the candles in your sconces.

Many web sites sell wall sconces online, offering a wide range of styles, including slate sconces, glass pillar candle holders, Marian slate sconces, swing tea light sconces, and many other varieties. Some sconce materials will include brass, bronze, ceramic, chrome, glass, crystal, paper, silver, stainless steel, and wood, wrought or cast iron.

Make Your Own Candle Sconces

What you’ll need:

a wooden planter box

glass candleholders and tea lights

rotary saw (or drill and jigsaw)

finishing nails

metal flashing

latex paint

sand paper

a hammer

Instructions:

To add color, its best to paint the pieces first with latex paint and set aside to dry.

Put a mark on the center and also where your plan to make holes for the candle light to shine through.

Trace squares and use your rotary saw to cut along these lines. You can use a large drill bit to start a hole if you don’t have a rotary saw. In this case, use a jigsaw to cut along the lines, starting at the hole you have drilled. Sand the edges smooth.

Prepare the planter box by unscrewing the back panel to remove. Now, cut a piece of the metal flashing, making it the same size as your panel. Attach the flashing using the finishing nails. Screw the panel back on the box.

Put a piece of scrap wood inside the box to raise the candles so light can shine through your holes. It’s best to put your tea lights inside the glass candleholders for added safety.

Do any necessary paint touch-up.

Track lighting is a simple way to add lighting to an entire room or provide accent lighting to highlight special features such as artwork.

This type of lighting is installed on a mounting track fixed to your ceiling.

The track can be custom configured to fit into the area desired and involves little or no remodeling since the track is mounted on an existing surface.

The only requirement is that there is a power source such as an existing ceiling junction box.

Occasionally, the power source may not be in the location where you want to place the track lighting. A simple solution is to purchase what are called L or T track adaptors (also called connectors) that are unobtrusive and blend into the track lighting layout.

These adaptors permit you to feed the electric from the power source to wherever the track lighting is set up. Once the track is installed, lighting heads or lighting cans are placed in the track and positioned to provide the desired lighting.

Track lighting is very flexible allowing the actual lights to be twisted or angled in such a way as to provide just the right illumination. This is perfect if you have a painting or feature area of the room you want to showcase! Because of the types of fixtures available, track lighting can provide a feeling of warmth and intimacy in both small and larger areas of your home.

There are a number of other areas in the home where track lighting might be an appropriate addition.

The bathroom is typically an area that has little ambient or natural light. A small strip of track lighting can be added near the shower. This will not only provide needed light in this area but will also create the illusion of the area being larger.

The kitchen and eating areas are often appropriate locations to install track lighting. If you have an island in the kitchen, a small strip of track lights will do a nice job of illuminating this food preparation area.

Some kitchens feature small counter-top eating areas that also lend themselves to track lighting.

We’re all familiar with fluorescent lighting in one form or another.

Almost all of us have worked in offices where the glow of fluorescent lights hummed overhead! In recent years, however, compact fluorescent bulbs that can be used interchangeably in sockets originally designed for incandescent light bulbs has brought the use of functional and decorative fluorescent lighting into the home both inside and out.

For years fluorescent lighting makers focused on fluorescent lighting fixtures that held elongated tubes. These fixtures are common in many public buildings and facilities. They can be installed in exterior areas that need strong illumination, for instance under a covered porch or patio. The intense white light from these tubes can be harsh, however, and unnatural and may not be the best choice for your home lighting needs.

A better solution would be the new compact fluorescent bulbs that are interchangeable with normal incandescent bulbs. Especially when placed in fixtures with colored or shaded covers, the light from these bulbs is gentle and pleasing, offering a variety of potential uses. Green shaded lights cast on plants, for instance, will enhance their appearance in the evening.

You can use blue lights outside around a pool, and soft amber lighting is nice for areas where people will congregate or sit and talk.

Beyond their ability to lower energy costs and the fact that they are environmentally friendly, fluorescent strip lighting and other kinds of fluorescent bulbs emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. This helps keep your electricity bill under control. Also, if used on your porch or deck on a summer night, the bulbs won’t produce much heat.
