If your bedroom doesn't feel sexy or romantic, it could be time to make some changes. Why not choose a romantic color scheme, change your bedding and spice things up in your bedroom with these sexy and romantic bedroom design ideas.

How to Make Your Bedroom Sexier

Do you feel like your bedroom is not sexy enough or lacking romance? Are there clothes heaped on the bed and plain white walls in your bedroom?

Or, have you simply grown bored with the way your bedroom is decorated? Do you find yourself avoiding your bedroom except when asleep?

We’ve put together some tips on how to make your bedroom more romantic, sexy and stylish.

Read on to learn how you can spice things up a little, whether you’re single and just want to be prepared or if you and your partner both seem to agree the bedroom needs a little more romance!

Why Some Bedrooms Just Don’t Feel Sexy

Clutter in the bedroom is a sure way to make your love life less inspired. Get rid of the clutter and make your bedroom as open and inviting as possible. This will surely add spice to your love life.

White or neutral walls can make your bedroom feel less than intimate, unless you carefully infuse color with art, bedding, window fashions or other accessories. There may be no more important aspect to setting a romantic mood in the bedroom than the effective use of color.

If you haven’t updated your bedroom in a while, you could simply be bored with the same old look …. and boredom is a sure way to spoil any romance. So, if might just be time to consider making a few changes to recharge your bedroom design … and your love life!

How to Add Romance to Your Bedroom Design

The first thing to do when redesigning the bedroom is to talk to your partner and be sure you both agree on the theme, color scheme and overall direction to take. If one partner loves the idea of wine red walls and the other hates it, you’re sure to have trouble.

Choosing a theme is the next thing you will want to do. Perhaps you want a boudoir theme. Maybe classic Victorian, country or modern chic; most any theme can be made to feel romantic with a little creativity and planning. Look in magazines and catalogs for inspiration on sexy and romantic bedroom themes.

Also critical is the color scheme you choose; color greatly affects how we feel, so for a romantic and sexy bedroom, some colors are more conducive to romance than others. And while you may be tempted to try something daring like red walls, you don’t want to overdo it. Instead, you could pick a color like goldenrod for the walls and enhance that with bedding that brings a bolder shade of red into the color scheme.

Selecting Romantic Bedroom Colors

If you really want to make your bedroom feel romantic and sexy, then try using one of these color palettes:

Neutral Tones – Earthy colors and neutral tones like beiges and tans are the trend in bedroom colors these days and lend themselves easily to almost accent colors.

Warm Tones – Nothing says sex like the warmer colors; reds, yellows and oranges add spice to a bedroom decor. If the brighter shades are too much for your taste, try using pastel warm tones.

Cool Tones – Relaxation is an important part of bedroom romance and cool tones like blues, greens and light shades of purple help set a relaxing mood in the bedroom.

Read our Bedroom Colors article for more ideas on bedroom color schemes.

Try Some New Art on the Walls

Art and bedroom accessories present opportunities to create an erotic setting in the bedroom; landscapes, portraits, portrayals of beautiful bodies or nature can help stimulate the subconscious toward intimacy and arousal.

Avoid anything violent or overtly emotionally provocative when it comes to artwork in the bedroom; sensual images are usually best and you don’t want to spend time contemplating the merits of art when romance is the intention.

Design a Unique Window Treatment

Window fashions have evolved significantly; don’t settle for plain old mini blinds or dated draperies in the bedroom. Try getting creative and use window coverings to add romance to your bedroom design.

You can dress your windows for romance and privacy by starting with window blinds or shades for basic privacy, and then layering on draperies, curtains, valances or cornices and unique hardware to give your window treatment a romantic look that matches your bedroom theme.

Get a New Bedroom Set

Treat yourself to something imaginative and out of the ordinary; the bed is quite important in setting a romantic feeling.

You might like something traditional like a four poster with sheer fabric canopy. Or you could try something more exotic like a bamboo screen for the headboard.

Whatever style tickles your fancy and inspires your imagination will make it feel sexier for you and your partner!

Bedding is also a great way to make your bedroom sexier; whether you like silk sheets, animal skin prints or floral patterns, there is no limit to imaginative bedding choices. And bedding also provides an easy means of changing things up so you won’t get bored with your bedroom decor.

Set a Romantic Mood with Bedroom Lighting and Sexy Scents

Lighting also plays a huge part in setting a romantic mood. Change lampshades to give color and light patterns, add track or recessed lighting with dimmers or put candle sconces on the wall.

Scented candles, luminaries and lamps are also great ways to give your bedroom a little more romantic mood. Scent, of course, plays a large part in the art of romance, so be sure to keep massage oils handy.

Following these tips will help make your bedroom sexier and more intimate. You and your partner will find that having a romantic bedroom can make all the difference in your love life and happiness together! You may even find yourself staying home for romantic weekend getaways!

A bedroom furnished in white can give the crisp, clean look of a modern interior design or the frilly look of sheer white fabric and white lace. Read on to find out how to pull off an all-white bedroom design.

The bedroom is your place to unwind, relax and do all sorts of private activities. Being the most personal room in the house, it must possess the feeling of ease, solace and cleanliness as well. If you are longing to experience these things, you might, want to consider stuffing your room with white bedroom furniture.

White bedroom furniture can create a heavenly atmosphere. With it, you can reflect your reveries well and think clearly enough because of the clarity of the ambiance. It also creates a warm and relaxing mood that can be compensating enough after coming from a hard day’s work.

White bedroom furniture produces the following effects:

Cleanliness – White bedroom furniture maybe simple to look at, yet no one can deny the fact that it represents cleanliness. Setting them up maybe challenging to a decorator but when matched with other colors, the plain style can be toned down.

Elegance and Class – Although white bedroom furniture can look so much plain; a creative mind, however, can make it look elegant and classy. It holds to be one of the most practical furniture pieces to suit everyone’s personal space. This is because the color is flexible enough to match and compliment other colors.

Illumination – Dark walls and drapes may keep the room from natural light, and they may look too strong to the eyes without the presence of proper color blending. By placing white bedroom furniture such as couches, end tables and others on the darker sides of the room, you will be able to lighten them up.

Such sides can be lit and a warm and inviting atmosphere can be created. If you are only using lampshades to illuminate your room, the white theme can be very helpful. Although not all light from lampshades work well with white bedroom furniture. By careful consideration, one can come up with the appropriate matches.

Dramatic Aura – Lighting the bedroom must do more than just dispel darkness. Most bedrooms benefit from a blend of functional and decorative lighting. White bedroom furniture then helps functional light to give the whole room its purpose, while at the same time maintain the dramatic effect especially when placed in the dark, bold patterns that seek special attention.

Space – The décor of your room produces a major effect on how spacious it looks. Not only that, the color you use will also create a big impact when it comes to this matter. White bedroom furniture can make the room look wider and more spacious. Therefore, it is very much advisable to small-sized bedrooms. With it, such rooms will look much bigger. It can also lessen the feeling of crowdedness. White drawers and cupboards therefore give the available space which you can use for storage, such as books, magazines and collectibles.

Accentuates – White bedroom furniture can accentuate your room. Laminating your floor with a white material will not just create an atmosphere of comfort. It can also bring about functional advantages compared to ordinary floors and other types of floors as well. It is recommended to have floors laminated in white to make the bedroom more spacious than it really is.

Let the Light Into Your Bedroom

White windows can let the natural light in and are the focal point of the bedroom. Window covers add style to the bedroom since they do not trap the light from coming in. Just like the white floor, white windows can make the room look functional during the day. White curtains and draperies may come in bold, lively patterns depicting pizzazz; however, they will still bring a fresh and calming effect as they allow light and fresh air to freely circulate inside the room.

Like the saying goes “You can never go wrong with white”, it’s the same with white bedroom furniture. You do not have to worry about adding white bedroom furniture to your old ones because it blends well with them. The designs of white bedroom furniture, too, lean towards simplicity with elegance. They never contradict the style of your old ones.

If you’re planning to get one but worried that white bedroom furniture will cost you a fortune, you don’t have to be. There are ones available at a bargain price. You just have to be creative on where to look. Flea markets are also a good source of white bedroom furniture.

Even if budget is tight decorating your master bedroom will help make it your own haven away from public view; a place you'll want to spend time relaxing. If you're looking for ways to make your master bedroom look better without spending a small fortune, read on for great money saving tips and ideas.

Our bedroom is our own little sanctuary, but many of us tend to neglect it because it is away from the public eye.

In fact, our bedroom is probably the only personal space we get in the home and therefore, should be a perfect haven.

Instead, it is often cluttered and under-used because, after all, we are usually the only ones to see it. But why not treat yourself and create a beautiful boudoir, as oppose to having a storage room with a bed.

It’s not as expensive to do as it sounds; all it takes is a little creativity, a lick of paint and a few accessories, so here are some tips to help!

The Master Bedroom is Your Haven, Not Your Storage Room!

It’s time to de-clutter. If you want a lovely boudoir then it needs to be organized. We often store all of the things we want to keep, but don’t use, in our bedrooms. This is probably because it is the only place, besides the loft/attic, that is hidden from the public eye and it is a lot easier to put it in the bedroom than to put it in the loft.

So take some storage boxes and start to work through all of the clutter. Anything you don’t need, throw away and anything you do need but don’t use often, put into labeled storage boxes. These can then be stored in storage cupboards or in the loft/attic. Yes, this does mean climbing all the way up those steps but it looks better than having random clutter scattered around. Once you are de-cluttered you can begin to work magic and start to decorate.

Decorating Does Not Mean Renovating the Entire Room

To many of us decorating means a lot of hard work and money. In actual fact, you can change the whole aspect of a room with a bit of paint. Paint is good for any room that needs a little face lift.

You don’t even have to paint every wall in the room you can just touch up on the wall in need of the most attention, usually the wall behind the bed. But whether the whole room needs re-painting or just one wall, it is still easy and cheap to do and will give the room a new feeling.

You could also consider adding borders, or stenciling designs onto the walls. This is only a minor task and is cheap and easy to undergo and it will give life to any dull, lifeless room.

Let Your Creativity Shine

To add even more life to your upcoming boudoir, have a rummage for some old material or buy some inexpensive tablecloths and make use for them in other ways. Choose colors that match with the color scheme/ theme of the room and you can create all sorts of little additions for your room, rather than paying for something someone else has made.

You can change the style of a chest of drawers by simply covering the top with some material or a table cloth or you can cover a canvas board with material and make a new themed picture to put over your bed.

If you are any good at needlecraft, you could also make your own pillows or create a runner for the bottom of the bed. There are so many creative ways of using material to make your own accessories or additions; you just have to think about it.

A Little Light with Big Impact

The best way to change the look and feel of a room is to buy a lamp. They aren’t expensive to buy and are available at many stores, including your local Wal-Mart. They are only a little adjustment but they make a big difference in the look and feel of a room. They come in many styles and colors so you will easily be able to find the right one to compliment the décor in the room.

Flowery Fragrance

Treat yourself and your room to the gift of flowers once a week. By placing them in a vase somewhere in the room, they not only look nice but also give off a lovely fragrance that gives the room atmosphere and freshness.

A Cozy Corner For A Little ‘Me’ Time

A room is not complete without a little cozy corner; a nice area to read a book or simply escape from the stresses of modern life. Just place a nicely defined chair in one corner of the room (you can also use large cushions or beanbags) and add a little table with a table lamp for a perfect little cozy corner that’s great for escaping from the rest of the world.

Top Seven Master Bedroom Decorating Cost Savers

Here are the top seven cost savers for the perfect boudoir (summarized):

Use paint! It is great for everything and comes in many colors. Your bedroom is your own personal space so be sure to let your personality shine through. If you want the room to be bright pink with blue spots on then go for it! It is not for anyone else to judge just for you to enjoy so make it personal to you. For more info on choosing colors see our story on Bedroom Colors.

Lighting is essential but to save money purchase a lamp(s) and/or candles. They create a perfect and peaceful setting that is inviting and warm, perfect for a boudoir! They can also add extra light for those of us who prefer bright rooms.

Purchase an area rug. Not only do they add depth and warmth to a room, they also deflect noise, ideal for a master bedroom as it should be peaceful and quiet. Also good for those with wood flooring as it helps soften and quiet the master bedroom.

Use fabric! As mentioned above, fabric has many uses. Shop at online auctions or look for sales to purchase fabric that can be used throughout the room. It is also good to dress a window as it can be draped over a rod easily giving an elegant and fresh new look.

Search through yard sales, store sales and online auctions for picture frames then frame photographs and place them around the room where you can see them. They will be comforting and will add personality to the room.

Buy fresh bedding. As the bed is usually the focal point of a room, by changing the duvet cover you can give the room a whole new look in whatever style or color you desire.

Use pillow shams (highly decorative pillow coverings) to add comfort to the room and the bed. They are both highly affordable and highly decorative. Ideal for those who aim for an inviting, warm room.

By following these tips you are sure to be able to create a plush, new, inviting boudoir that is both personal and beneficial to you and your pocket!

Boys will be boys and you want yours to love his bedroom, but where do you start when decorating it? See hundreds of ideas, pictures and tips on boys room decor.

Every kid’s room needs a theme. With most boys’ rooms, a theme will be easy to decide, based on his likes and interests.

When he grows out of the toddler stage and starts school, he will have begun to form specific affinities for certain things; race cars and trucks, sports, cartoon characters, dinosaurs; whatever comes naturally!

There are tons of themes to pick from when decorating your boy room.

Letting him help choose the theme ensures that he will like it, but you may want to avoid big ticket items that are tied too closely to a fad or phase he’s going through; that $1,000 train set may seem great to him at seven, but by the time he’s ten it may well have been banished to the attic!

Our Boy’s Bedroom Article Series is packed with tons of great, affordable ideas to help you put together a room he will love. Below you’ll find an overview of boy’s room themes with links to complete stories on how to achieve some of the most popular ideas and themes.

Dinosaur Bedroom
If your boy likes dinosaurs, a wall mural or wall art can be a great way to get started with the dinosaur theme. Whether you use something cute or more realistic depends on whether he is easily scared or tends to have bad dreams; you don’t want him waking up in the middle of the night being chased by Tyrannosaurus Rex!

You can find lots of great dinosaur-themed bedding, curtain fabric, light switch cover plates, clocks, wall borders and posters online. To learn more read our complete article on Designing a Boy’s Dinosaur Bedroom.

Animals & Wildlife
Whether your son is into dogs or wild animals like birds, big cats or snakes, a nature theme works well and is easy to pull together, with posters, stuffed animals and models.

Paint a wall mural, put up wallpaper or other wall art to transform his room into a zoo, Wildlife Park or whatever his imagination dreams up.

Read more great ideas on designing an animal theme bedroom in our complete article on Designing a Boy’s Animal Bedroom.

Jungle Safari
Safari is always a fun theme. Add color by using animal print wallpaper borders, wall art and fabrics. You can paint his walls green, brown, ivory, or whatever colors match the wall border. Pillow covers with zebra stripes, big cat or other animal fur fabrics are great. Put a pith helmet, old binoculars or maybe a replica African wood mask on the wall.

Camping & Lodge Decor
If you child loves the outdoors and camping, then this could be the right theme for his room; give his room a rustic lodge decor. You’ll find wallpaper borders with everything from snowshoes to moose, trout, bears or birds in the patterns. You can use plaid flannel patterns for bed linens, which are also warm and comfy for those cold winter nights. A rustic pine or log bed can be fun, as well as a big trunk for storage at the foot of the bed.
Decorating your teen girl's room can be a fun project for moms and daughters to enjoy together but a teenager should have plenty of say in how her room looks!

A teenager’s room is her kingdom and decorating it should be a project that reflects that much importance.

No girl wants to keep the rocking chair mom loved so much or the little hand-painted kid’s dresser she adored at five forever. It is only natural that as a girl matures into a woman her tastes and interests are changing and she wants to make her room reflect those changes.

Whether you’re a mom looking for ideas to decorate your teenage daughter’s room or a teenager working on a new look for your own bedroom, read on to learn more about managing this important project!

Planning Your Teen Girl Bedroom

The first thing to do is to create a plan. Measure the dimensions of your bedroom; you want to know the width, height, and length and draw the floor plan. Decide which furniture you will keep and which you want to replace. Some items may be “recycled” by painting or otherwise redecorating the appearance; you’ll be amazed what a coat of faux paint, stencils and new drawer pulls can do to change the look!

Clean out your bedroom and get rid of anything you don’t want or need. You can have a garage sale and raise some funds for your bedroom decorating project. Anything left over after that you can donate to a charity organization or give to siblings and friends.

Teen Girl’s Furniture

Pick a bed that fits the theme you’ve selected for your teen girl bedroom. A do-it-yourself headboard can be a fun and inexpensive part of your bedroom decorating project. If you can’t buy a new bed, think of creative ways to decorate your old headboard, add a sheer curtain or canopy.

Another nice feature to consider is a sitting area; whether you decide on a comfy chair, a desk and desk chair, a small sofa or loveseat or even a couple of bean bag chairs you can store in the closet when not needed.

If you like to have sleepovers a small futon or trundle bed with a pull out mattress is convenient. Of course, leaving open floor space for sleeping bags works fine too!

Once you’ve decided on the major pieces of furniture you want in your room, draw them on the floor plan. You might want to try making several drawings so you can consider various layouts before finalizing where you want everything to go.
Before you begin the decorating phase of the project you might even want to place furniture and try more than one layout to see which arrangement you like best.

Teen Girl’s Bedroom Theme and Focal Point

Next, decide on a theme and focal point for your room; often times the bed may be the focal point, but it could also be a makeup table, window seat or other design feature. Remember to keep things in scale; if you have a small room and you pick a king-size bed you may not have enough room left over for other important features.

Themes can come very naturally depending on your interests and taste, but having some theme will give your room a more cohesive design. A theme could be based on your favorite movie or music stars, sports, animals or it could be based on a particular style of décor such as modern or art deco, country or traditional Victorian décor, etc.

Consider the types of activities you tend to like doing in your room. You’ll want a space to study and do homework, put on make up and get dressed, a place to curl up with your favorite book, etc. Every teen girl has to decide what activities are most important in her room.

Plan for plenty of storage space; the easier it is to keep things organized, the simpler it is to keep your room neat and tidy without making cleaning a big chore. Closet organizers, under-bed storage and a tall chest of drawers are a just a few possible ways to keep stuff organized. You need a place to keep your shoes organized, a place to put clothes for laundry and a trash can.

Organize drawers and storage space so that like items are kept together; make it as easy and simple as possible to keep your room neat and you’ll like it a whole lot more than if you have dirty clothes, shoes and junk thrown all over the room!

Choosing Teen Girl Room Colors

While any girl wants to use her favorite colors for bedding, window treatment, area rug, etc. remember that too many colors will confuse and overwhelm the eye; try to pick no more than two primary colors and two accent colors. Any more than about four colors and your bedroom will start to look garish.

Lighter colors and hues will make a room look bigger, while darker colors can add drama. Try to use the same hues within the colors you select, going with lighter, softer pastels or contrasting bright shades of the colors you like.

Look at lots of pictures in books, magazines and online, watch a couple of home decorating shows on TV, go to a design center and talk with others to get ideas and pick the color scheme that’s just right for your new teen girl’s bedroom décor!

Design Patterns and Refrains

Remember that pattern makes a huge difference in how you use colors for walls, artwork, fabrics, etc. a pattern or design element that is repeated is called a refrain, and just as in music, the use of a memorable refrain is a key ingredient in achieving a successful interior design. Some suggestions for a refrain or pattern can include:

Flowers or a floral pattern

Polka dots or circles

Stripes or plaids

Fluffy white clouds on a blue background

Sun, moon, stars or other natural subject

Teen Girl Comforters and Bed Linens

Once you have your furniture arrangement, theme and colors worked out, its time to start selecting your decorative elements. The nice thing about bedding is that it can be a relatively inexpensive way to add color and style; as your tastes change, you can alter the look of your bedroom by changing the comforter, sheets and pillow covers.

Walls and Curtains

Painting is a big project, so be sure to learn proper technique, how to mask off and cover the floors properly, etc. if you are painting your bedroom walls. Mom won’t be pleased if you get overspray on the carpet, furniture, etc. and it may be best to make this one a collaborative effort!

Be sure the colors are happy; while black or dark purple walls might seem cool at first, you may find it depressing if you overdo it. If you want something that really stands out, you might select just one wall to use that color or do a collage or art on that wall, leaving the other walls either neutral (white or off white) or with lighter color shades.

For window treatments, you want to remember that privacy is important, so while a frilly white lace curtain may look good, you want something like a window blind or shade behind it so that you have more flexible control over light and privacy.

Teen Girl Bedroom Accessories

Once you have furniture, wall colors, curtains, bedding, etc. all worked out, its time to consider some accessories; this is like putting on jewelry and make up when getting ready to go out. Accessories can be the most fun part of decorating your bedroom!

While mom often has a major say in whether you can afford a new bed or whether the wall colors you chose are acceptable, a reasonable mom will let her teen girl pick the accessories herself!

Lamps can add a nice touch and you can work together to create a unique lampshade. Remember you want good overall ambient light; a ceiling light fixture will generally do the trick. Task lighting is important for your desk or reading and sitting area. Accent lighting can be added by using a small lamp on night tables, dressers or vanities. Or try using rope lights to add some accent lighting.

A book case or book shelves will give you a good place to keep books and display photos, prize possessions, awards, etc. A decorative jewelry box is a must have accessory in most teen girls’ room.

One trick to keep in mind when it comes to accessories is not to clutter the look of your room too much; if you have more items than you can display all at once, try rotating items every few weeks. This will give you an easy way to change and update your bedroom décor over time.

Some other teen girl bedroom accessory ideas include:

Look for interesting objects you can display on walls and/or shelves; scarves or swags, clothing items, album covers, books, memorabilia …. whatever fits the style and theme you are trying to achieve.

Make your own lampshade by using a glue gun and/or staple gun to attach patterned fabric to a plain lampshade; if you pick the right sheer fabric and pattern you can achieve very interesting patterns of light and shadow on the walls and ceiling.

Use a vase to create your own floral arrangement; use faux plant and flower products from your local craft store or even a live plant or two if you want your room to look more natural and add a splash of greenery and color.

Put a large, cork bulletin board on the wall you can use to pin up important notes, a calendar, a collage of magazine photo cutouts, etc.

Use panels of sheer curtain material attached to the ceiling over the center of your bed and drape them casually to the floor around the bed to create an inexpensive canopy.

Foam core sheets can be cut and painted to create interesting wall art without having to paint the walls.

A large floor standing mirror in a corner or wall mirror over the vanity is important in any girl’s room and can make a great focal point for the room.

Small details like funky drawer pulls, door knobs, light switch and electrical outlet cover plates and decorative baseboard, crown molding, chair rail, etc. can really make your bedroom design pop.

Shopping Around

Remember that you can do things without spending a ton of money. Go online and look at items, making a list and then prioritizing it; at first you’re just shopping so there’s no harm in looking at items with a range of prices.

Use Microsoft Word or a paper notebook to write down notes and create a collage of what your room will look like; this way you can consider possibilities and see how various ideas might work before committing to making purchases.

Once you zero in on the items you really want, you can shop various online stores and local shops to find the best deals on the things you want. For example, you may see a bedroom furniture set you really like at an expensive boutique and then find something similar at a discount retailer like Ikea, Target or Wal-Mart that looks almost as good for a fraction of the price; it really pays to shop around!

Girl Teen’s Decorating Tips

For Teen Girls:

Be sure to consult your parents before re-decorating your room; check with them before painting or you could cause an outright war over the entire project.

Remember that decorating costs real money; don’t insist on having all the most expensive items.

Be willing to negotiate with mom and dad; if you can’t have the super-expensive bed you wanted perhaps you can compromise on something nice that costs less.

Seek advice; remember that it takes years to become a professional interior designer so expect you will make mistakes. For example, your favorite colors may not all go well together when picking a color scheme for your bedroom!

You want your bedroom to look unique; it should reflect your personality, likes and interests, but be careful not to pick elements that you might hate in a few weeks or months!

For Moms with Teen Daughters:

Try to remember what it was like when you were a teenager. Listen to your daughter with empathy before summarily dismissing any of her decorating ideas.

Use the bedroom decorating project to help your teenager learn concepts like project planning, budgeting and interior design; make this a fun project you can work on together but let her own the project.

Let your daughter try planning and setting a budget for her “dream” room first. Once you both know the total cost and what would be involved, it will be easier to begin negotiating toward a mutual agreement.

Encourage your daughter to put as much time into planning and consideration as actual decorating; let her know you support her efforts and appreciate how important the project is to her.

Remember that any decoration is just temporary; you can always repaint the walls later!

Choosing colors for you bedroom is very personal. Color has a huge affect on the mind and your mood, so understanding the psychology of color can help guide you in selecting the best color scheme for your bedroom!

Choosing colors for bedroom walls, bedding, furniture, window treatments and accessories is a very personal matter.

When selecting your bedroom colors, you may first want to consider the mood you want the decor to produce.

The effect of color on the mind is quite an interesting subject and the psychology of color has been widely researched and the results show that color has a profound effect on our thoughts, perceptions and interactions.

It seems that in China, for example, red tends to elicit a feeling of calm, while in America red is a color associated with aggression.

For most people, the bedroom is a place for privacy, harmony and relaxation. And, of course, you want master bedroom colors that feel cozy and romantic!

Also, it is important to consider the tone and shade of colors, as well as the use of texture and patterns, which can have more impact on the mood your bedroom evokes than just the colors themselves.

Finally, you have the final say! No matter what experts or research indicates about color psychology, you are the person whose mind will be most affected by the colors you choose for your bedroom and only you can truly know and understand the feelings different colors evoke for yourself.

Matching Your Bedroom Colors and Decor

While psychology and picking feng shui bedroom colors should factor into your decisions, it is also important to think about the overall decor of your bedroom.

If you have the luxury of starting with a blank slate, then you can choose a bedroom set and accessorize to match your color choices.

But most of the time you might be remodeling or moving into a new home and already have existing bedroom furniture and other decor items to consider. Selling or donating old furniture and replacing it may be another option to consider if you want a fresh look.

If you try to force bright colors to work in a French country decor, for example, you are just asking for trouble.

On the other hand, if your bedroom decor is distinctly tropical or Hawaiian, then using a color scheme that is too neutral could also be problematic.

Neutral Tones

The growing trend in bedroom wall colors is toward neutral tones; tans and medium to rich browns are very popular, evoking an “earthier” image than brighter hues.

Neutral colors are a very good primary color choice for the bedroom since they can always be mixed with green, blue, gold or red accent colors. By using these accent colors for bedding and accessory items, you will be able to switch accent colors and alter the mood of your bedroom seasonally or whenever you want a fresh new look.

Gray is a shade you might want to avoid since it can evoke feelings of sadness, depression or a battleship; probably not the mood or images you want in your bedroom!

Cool Tones

Using cool paint colors for bedroom will help make the room seem slightly bigger and give your bedroom an airier feeling.

Colors like green, blue, green or lavender work well in many bedrooms. Blues and greens, which are associated with the sea and sky, can help evoke a sense of serenity and tranquility in the bedroom.

Pastel pinks, lavenders and purples can also work for bedroom walls, especially if you are decorating a little girl’s room. Use these colors if you want a more feminine room decor.

Warm Tones

Vibrant reds, yellows and oranges can energize a bedroom, helping revitalize you in the morning when you wake from bed and are surrounded by bright color.

These brighter colors also work well when painting a boy’s bedroom walls. If you want to infuse a more youthful touch to your bedroom, warmer, brighter colors may be the way to go.

Warm hues can also create a calm and relaxed mood, if the right tones and shades are selected.

Consider warm hues like peach, burnt orange or buttercup gold, using lighter or pastel shades rather than deeper or brighter shades.

Tips on How to Choose Bedroom Colors

Use sample colors, painting swatches of each on your walls before making final selection. Give yourself a couple of days to consider the color swatches in different lighting conditions and times of day to see how they affect your mood and fit in with your bedroom design.

Be careful with the intensity of your color choices. If you want to use bolder shades, try using them as accent colors rather than your primary bedroom wall color.

Be sure you and your partner are in agreement; while he might have first choice on the colors he wants for the den or game room and she might pick the kitchen color palette, the bedroom is one place where both partner should definitely be in agreement.

Use accessories like plants, throws, and chairs to continue your color scheme throughout the room.

Mixing colors will bring a more natural feeling to your room. Use pale or pastel colors on your walls, ceiling and carpet, and brighter colors with dark trim for curtains and upholstery.

If budget is tight, you can always to with white on white, which can create an airy and ethereal look that many people find calming. Pastel window blinds, throws and pillows can add a splash of color.

Use more vivid colors in a child’s bedroom.

» Go Back to Girls Bedroom Themes & Decorating Guide

When you’re decorating your daughter’s bedroom, you want to create a room that she’ll enjoy, but you also realize that her interests today might be mortifying to her in a few years.

Since most of us can’t afford a complete redecorate every few years, it’s only prudent to choose a decorating approach that allows your girl’s room to grow along with her.

The most common piece of advice you’ll hear is to choose big-ticket items in classic lines and generic colors that will suit any style she might want.

Then, when she suddenly decides that the Disney Princess bedroom theme is a thing of the past, it’s relatively inexpensive to switch to something new because you only need to update the wall decorations, bedding, and curtains, blinds or other window treatments.

You can also customize the windows to add stylistic punch to the room without spending a fortune.

Window Treatment Ideas for your Girl’s Room

You have three options for kids’ window treatments: curtains, roller shades, and mini blinds. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Curtains are common, particularly since they come in a variety of patterns. If your daughter just has to have a Tinkerbell bedroom, curtains might be the best choice for you. They also have the added advantage of being easy to install and replace, so they’ll be easy to replace when she gets sick of Tinkerbell and wants something new. The major disadvantage of curtains is that they’re more difficult to open and close. You can tie them back, but a lot of the light will still be blocked. And installing a pull cord requires a special curtain rod and has safety issues for younger girls.

Roller shades provide some of the design options you can find in curtains, and they’re easier to open. However, it may be difficult for her to close the shades when they’re fully open, so you may need to find an option with a pull cord.

Mini blinds are very cost-effective, and they offer a lot of light control. Unfortunately, with blinds you’re fairly limited in design options. A variety of colors and decorative tapes are available, but you’ll have to work to find some child friendly options. You can also combine them with a curtain, valance, or decorative paint scheme to make them more attractive.

Once you’ve selected a theme for your daughter’s room, consider how you might combine a window treatment with accessories to come up with a unique and attractive look.

Sure, you can buy curtains off the shelf, install them, and leave it at that, but custom treatments are easier than you may realize.

Some window treatment ideas for a girls’ bedroom include:

Butterfly theme – For a butterfly-themed bedroom, you can purchase butterfly-print curtains, or why not make your own? You could use a butterfly stamp to customize a curtain, valance, or roller shade. Or pick bright jewel colored sheers and accent them with butterfly pins.

Cowgirl theme – Why should boys get to have all the western-themed fun? A girl who likes horses might enjoy a cowgirl theme. Try hanging a brown roller shade, and then string bandanas on a length of rope for an impromptu valance. Or hang a bright pink cowboy hat from the curtain rod.

Princess theme – Princess themes will probably never go out of style with little girls. Sweeping, diaphanous curtains are a good choice for a princess bedroom. Or if you’re skilled with a paintbrush, try a plain roller shade and paint a tower shape around the window frame. If you’re not so great with a paintbrush, you can still get the same effect by painting the walls sky blue and finding a shade or blinds to match. Hang a pre-made castle wall mural next to the window.

Decorating a child’s bedroom is a difficult process. You want to create a room that he’ll be happy in, but you don’t necessarily want to spend a lot of money on Power Ranger decorations when he might lose interest in them in a year. Your goal is to decorate the space according to his tastes without committing to something permanent and difficult to update in a few years.

This may be easier than you realize; just focus on easy-to-update decorative elements like window treatments and bedding and stick to more generic designs and colors when it comes to larger purchases like furniture and wall paint. Window treatments present a terrific opportunity to customize your boys’ bedroom; follow these tips to find the right treatment to express his tastes.

Boy’s Room Window Treatment Options

The three major options for window treatments in a kids’ bedroom are curtains, mini blinds, and roller shades.

Curtains are easy to install and replace, and they come in a variety of patterns. If your child is completely wild for a specific cartoon or movie character, curtains may be your best bet. However, they’re difficult to open and close in comparison to the other options, so if your child spends a lot of time in his room during the daytime, you may want to select another option that allows for easier light control.

Mini blinds are also easy to install, and they open and close very easily. They’re also incredibly cost-effective. The major disadvantage of blinds is that the colors and patterns are pretty limited. Consider using mini blinds as a part of a layered approach with a valance or decorative paint project to up the design elements.

Roller shades are an attractive middle-of-the-road option, offering more design options than the blind but easier opening than the curtain. However, it may be difficult for younger boys to reach the shades to pull them closed, so you may need to find an option with a pull cord.

All of the above options can be layered or combined with a valance to easily create a customized window treatment that will suit any kids’ bedroom.

Some window ideas for a boys’ bedroom include:

Military theme – For a military-themed bedroom, you can purchase curtains in camouflage or red, white, and blue prints, or you can customize your own. Try a red roller shade with a dark blue valance, and attach some iron-on military patches to the valance.

Knight theme – This is a terrific opportunity to encourage your son to be creative. Have him pick two colors for his knight’s crest, and use both colors in the window treatment. Buy some inexpensive wooden swords at a craft store and hang them above the windows to complete the look.

Characters – It seems inevitable that our children will demand their favorite characters, especially when they’re younger. If your son is fixated on one of the more common characters, you should probably be able to find a set of curtains in the right pattern. But what if he’s got to have a less popular character, and you’ve looked everywhere but can’t find the curtains? One option is to go with a plain curtain or blinds and make your own valance. Find some stickers and use spray adhesive to make them stay. Or stencil the first letter of the character’s name onto the curtains and find posters or other decorative elements featuring the character.

If your teenager is anything like I was, her room is a constant mess.

I remember having to wade through piles of books and clothes to get to my bed, which was never made.

Despite all of the mess, my walls were always decorated to the nines and reflected my interests and personality.

Whether your kid is a neatnik or a slob, the teen bedroom is an important reflection of their personality and expression of their growing independence.

The ability to decorate the room to create a place of their own is incredibly important, but as parents it’s difficult not to wince when Sally says she wants to paint the walls in black and white tiger stripes.

One possible suggestion to this problem is to steer her (or him) toward adjusting the window treatments. With windows, they can express their personal style in a less permanent manner.

Teen Window Ideas

Above all, the window treatments should reflect your teen’s personality. Certainly, there are some curtain lines targeted to teens, but generally they focus on teen girls, and the options are relatively limited.

It is easy, however, to add a few decorative touches to plain curtains, blinds, or shutters to make them work wonderfully in your teen’s bedroom. Consider his or her interests and see if you can’t come up with an option that really reflects who they are.

With a few stencils or some glue, you can take a plain window treatment and really make it pop.

Some examples of how you might customize window treatments for teen girls are:

The animal print fanatic – For a girl who loves zebra or cheetah prints, you can certainly buy drapes in that print, but you have other options as well. Consider purchasing sheers and painting in the stripes or dots in a bright color. The pop of color would be especially welcome in a room done mostly in black and white. Or buy a roller shade and glue a strip of fur onto the bottom to add texture. You could tie it into the room with some furry pillows to match.

The exotic bedroom – Exotic bedrooms with deep colors and Indian-inspired prints are very big in teen girls’ rooms. The layered approach is the best way to go here, but why limit yourself to fabrics? Layer a few brightly colored sheers, and then accessorize them with strings of beads or copper coins, or pin bright jewels directly to the fabric. You can also use these accessories to tie the curtains back out of the way to let in the light.

The punk rock girl – For a girl into the punk rock theme, or one who simply likes music, why not raid their music and poster collection to help create a window treatment? String blank CDs with fishing wire and drape them over the curtain rod. Or purchase some wooden shutters; print out photos of her favorite music groups, and decoupage them onto the shutters.

Some examples of how you might customize window treatments for a teenage boy are:

The sports fan – Again, you can default to curtains in a sports-themed print, but there are other options. Consider buying plain fabric panels or a roller shade and add a row of sports-themed iron on patches to the bottom. This idea would work especially well in a NASCAR themed bedroom.

The surfer dude – Bamboo blinds or other woven woods work well with a surf theme. Consider buying some secondhand Hawaiian shirts in crazy patterns and throw them over the rods as an impromptu valance. Or buy some wooden shutters and decoupage them with surf-print scrapbook paper.

For the cowboy – For a guy who likes horses, the rodeo, or the country, try stringing bandannas up for a valance or attach one to the bottom of a roller shade as a pull cord. You could also use a length of rope as a tieback.

A teen’s bedroom says a lot about who he or she is.

While parents might want to keep a rein on the crazy color schemes since they’ll be the ones repainting after they’ve gone off to college, it’s important to let your teens or tweens express their personalities and create a room they want to call their own.

Bedding is an important design element for a teen’s room.

Follow these suggestions on bedding for your teen’s bedroom.

Style Considerations

As a parent, you’ll probably have a lot less input into your teen’s bedroom than you did at younger ages, but there are still some style-related issues that you’ll need to consider.

Try to select teen bedding that is easy to wash, particularly if your teen is just learning how to do his own laundry. A wrinkle-free fabric might also be a good idea if she’s the type who will leave the sheets piled up in the corner for a week or two before changing them.

Generally, it is easier to find teen bedding sets than separate pieces. Most sets are available in twin and full sizes, although some also come in queen size as well. Most will include a comforter or duvet; many teen bedding sets also come with add-ons like bed skirts and throw pillows.

Teens’ Room Bedding Themes

There are many bedding sets out there targeted specifically at teens. Some lines such as Seventeen and Glam Girl provide bedding choices specifically for teen girls. Lines for teen boys include X Games, NBA, and NFL bedding.

Although it may be a few years until your teen goes off to college, check the dorm sets available every year at major stores. They offer some very cost-effective and up-to-the-moment trendy teen bed sheet options.

Generally, teen-friendly bedding themes are less print-heavy and more adult-looking than kids bedding. Prints are more subtle and often geometric in nature or limited to logos.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, especially when it comes to teens. The goal is to create a bedding look that expresses their individuality.

Some popular teen bedding themes for girls include:

Bright colors – Think 60’s inspired bright colors like lime green, hot pink, and electric orange. Layer them together for a funky look.

Punk accents – Some punk-inspired looks include black and white sheets printed with cherries or dark purple and electric green prints. Fur-trimmed pillows work well with this style.

Cutting-edge geometrics – Look for zebra prints in neon colors, brightly-colored polka dots, or pink lipstick prints.

Some popular teen bedding themes for boys include:

Surfing – Look for ocean-inspired colors or retro surfing prints reminiscent of a Hawaiian shirt.

Sports – While younger boys might like prints featuring footballs and basketballs, try something a little more sophisticated for a teen. Many of the major sports, including X Games, NBA, NFL, and Nascar have their own bedding lines.

Military – Try a camouflage print comforter with dark brown or green sheets, or go for a red, white, and blue theme.

Toddler beds help to ease the transition between cribs and big kid beds.

These beds are built especially for toddlers; they are low to the ground, and most have barriers on all four sides to prevent your child from rolling out in the middle of the night.

Their smaller size might be more easily accepted by a child who’s intimidated by the size of a twin bed.

Toddler beds require special toddler bed sheets rather than standard twin sizes.

Follow these tips in selecting toddler bedding for your little one’s first big kid bed:

Style Considerations

Most toddler bedding comes in sets. Toddler bedding sets usually come with a comforter, fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcase. At the very least, you’ll need an extra fitted and flat sheet for accidents.

You can buy an extra set of toddler sheets in solid colors for middle-of-the-night changes. And don’t forget a waterproof mattress pad to protect the mattress.

Many sets also have coordinating window treatments available if you’re interested, but consider how long your child is likely to use the toddler bed before spending a lot of money on the extras.

Generally, toddler bedding sets come in 100% cotton and are highly washable, but there are some fancy versions that might contain materials that could irritate sensitive skin and might not wash well. Make sure to check the materials before you buy.

Some toddler beds have fancy designs like racecars or fire trucks for boys and princess carriages or castles for girls. These beds may have special bedding considerations that you’ll need to consider when purchasing bedding for your toddler.

Toddlers’ Room Bedding Themes

Toddler beds (and therefore toddler bed sheets) have increased in popularity, so toddler size bedding is now available in almost all of the same themes as bedding for older children. Licensed character sets such as Disney Cars or Disney Princess toddler bedding are readily available at major stores.

There are also character sets targeted for younger children, such as Sesame Street, Blues Clues, and Winnie the Pooh. Since the toddler bed will be retired when your child is older, feel free to pick a theme that is toddler-friendly.

You won’t be able to use the bedding on the twin bed when your child graduates to it, and the more appealing you can make the toddler bed, the more likely he or she is to sleep there.

If your child isn’t a television watcher or you’d like to try something a little different, consider these possible bedding themes for your toddler’s room:

Choo choo trains – Train-printed bedding would be a great choice for a little boy who likes models or Thomas the Train.

Bugs – Look for bug prints for your little boy, and decorate the room with coordinating plastic critters.

Ballerina – Choose a ballet-inspired print for a budding dancer, and hang ballet slippers on the walls.

Flowers – Select a flowery pastel print for a little girl who loves pink, and accessorize with plenty of throw pillows.

A boys bedroom should reflect his interests and personality.

Bedding is a simple and cost-effective way to personalize your son’s room.

Fortunately, boys bedding has evolved past the days of scratchy polyester bedspreads.

Now there are a variety of styles available to fully express his personality.

Depending on his interests, he may select themed bedding in sports or military patterns, or he may take a more traditional approach with flannel plaids or stripes.

Follow these tips in selecting boys bedding:

Style Considerations

When choosing boys bedding, consider the style of bed that he’s using. Most boys bedding is designed for twin beds, so if you’re working with a larger size, you might need to work harder to find designs he likes. If you’d like coordinating draperies or other accessories, limit your search accordingly.

Decide whether you prefer a boys bedding set or would like to try the mix-and-match approach. Some boys bedding sets come with the sheets and pillow cases; others include blankets or comforters and sometimes throw pillows. Make sure that you know what’s included in a set before you buy it.

Consider buying more than one set if you find the perfect pattern, and make sure to choose a fabric that will hold up over repeated washings.

Boys’ Room Bedding Themes

When it comes to selecting a theme for a boys bedroom, take a look at his interests. Sometimes it might seem like they change twice a week, but he should have some long lasting interests that he won’t be sick of within the month. Browse his bookshelf and movie collection for themes that would make good themes.

The good news is that a set of boys twin bedding is relatively inexpensive, particularly if you select a neutral comforter or inexpensive blanket that can be easily replaced. So if he’s absolutely determined to have Cars bedding, you can replace it relatively inexpensively when the Cars craze passes.

It’s always a good idea to try to select bedding that he’ll still be interested in next year. Sports and Disney characters are popular choices for boys bedrooms, but you have plenty of other options.

Some other bedding themes that boys will love include:

Safari or rain forest – Look for animal-print bedding and take your design cues from the colors in the pattern. Dark greens and blue suggest a rain forest, while tans and ivories would suggest a desert safari. Decorate the room with stuffed animals and animal pictures.

Cowboys – Look for prints featuring horses, lassos, and sheriff’s stars; bandana prints; or layered solids in red, blue, and brown. Use decorations embellished with rope and bandana prints throughout the room.

Pirates – The pirate theme is particularly popular right now; you can buy pirate prints and accessories or create your own swashbuckling theme. Look for bedding printed with ships or the Jolly Roger skull and bones motif. Have your child design his own pirate flag to display on the wall.

Emergency! – Most boys love superheroes, why not let real-life heroes inspire his room décor? Look for bedding in fireman or policeman prints. Hang fire and police costumes on the wall for decoration; just make sure to hang them low enough for playtime.

A girls bedroom design should reflect her personality, and bedding is an integral part of the design. Depending on your daughter’s interests, she may choose bedding in trendy fashions and vibrant colors, or her tastes may run to subdued pastels.

The good news is that girls bedding has evolved past the days of scratchy polyester bedspreads. Now there are girls’ bedding options in a variety of styles to express her personality.

Style Considerations

When choosing bedding for your little girl, it’s important to consider the bed first. Most girls bedding comes in twin sizes; if you’re working with a double-sized bed or larger, you may need to work harder to find the designs you want.

You may also further need to limit your selection to girls twin bedding designs with coordinating bed skirts (for girls who clean by shoving everything under the bed) or matching canopies. Thinking about these issues in advance can save you a lot of time and effort.

Decide whether you want to buy a girls bedding set or try the mix-and-match approach. Some girls bedding sets will come with only the sheets and pillow cases; others will include comforters and sometimes bed skirts or coordinating window treatments. Make sure that you know what’s included in the set if you decide to go that route.

Choose a fabric that will hold up well over repeated washings, and consider buying more than one set if you find a pattern that she’s in love with.

Bedding Themes

When it comes to choosing a theme for your girls bedroom, start by looking at her interests. Sometimes it seems like kids’ interests change twice a week, but there should be some consistent patterns if you look hard enough. Look through books and browse her movie collection for themes that suggest lasting interests that would make a good theme.

The best news about bedding is that a set of girls twin bedding is relatively inexpensive provided that you coordinate it with a neutral comforter or inexpensive blanket, so if she’s determined to have Disney princess bedding, then you can replace the bedding relatively inexpensively when she gets older. Still, as much as possible, it’s a good idea to select bedding that your child will still be interested in next year.

Some bedding themes that are suitable for girls include:

Fantasy realm – Look for girls bedding printed with fairies, princesses, or angels. Consider a coordinating canopy, wall hanging, or fantastic mural to compliment the bedding.

Flower power – Bright colors and retro prints are very popular; why not choose bedding with a bright 60s flower print? Or layer plain sheets in bright oranges, greens, and pinks, and coordinate with flower-shaped wall stickers.

Butterflies – Butterfly prints are available in pastels and brights to suit any little girl’s personality. Hang butterflies around the room to coordinate; inexpensive versions can be found in most garden stores.

Toile – Toile bedding works well for both younger and older girls. For the younger child, decorate the room with tea party accessories. As she grows, remove the fanciful touches for a more grown-up look.

Every kid is different, and it’s important that their room reflects their personal tastes.

Kids bedding is one easy, cost-effective way to let your children express their personalities as preschoolers, grade school children, and eventually as teens.

Unfortunately, their preferences change from one age to the next, so how do you select bedding that will grow with them so that you don’t need to buy a new set every year?

Consider the following tips to help you select bedding that your child will enjoy without breaking your bank.

Specific style suggestions for boys, girls, babies, and teens are also available.

Style Considerations

When it comes to the style of your kids bedding, think about their personality and behaviors. It probably doesn’t make sense to buy expensive coordinating bedding for a rambunctious boy who won’t stop jumping on the bed. Better to stick with easy-to-wash, wrinkle-free fabrics. And if you’re outfitting a room for a tomboy, a casual mix-and-match bedding approach might suit her personality better than a frilly canopy bed with matching bedding.

Also consider exactly what types of bedding you should use. If your child is storing toys under the bed, avoid using a bed skirt that could be torn or pulled out of place. Delicate quilts might be a great choice for older kids, but that rambunctious bed-jumper probably would damage them. He would probably do better with a sturdier fleece blanket.

Bedding Themes

When selecting a bedding theme, let your child help. Consider his or her interests and try to integrate them into the room. Of course, this can be difficult when those interests seem to change on a daily basis, so the best option is to make the larger design elements as neutral as possible.

When it comes to bedding for kids, this means that it may be best to select a comforter in a solid color, and then introduce the theme with patterned sheets and pillow cases. That way, when junior suddenly decides that Transformers are too juvenile and he now wants some sports-themed bedding, it will be a more cost-effective transformation between the two since you could keep the comforter and would only need to buy new sheets.

If cost is an issue, select themes for your kids bedding that are more likely to grow with them. Dora the Explorer bedding for a little girl would be cute, but there’s no way that a tween would be caught dead with it.

Try looking for themes which could appeal to all ages, like sports kids bedding for boys or tropical bedding for girls. There are no guarantees when it comes to teens and tweens, but at least there’s a chance that they’ll stick with it as they grow.

Once you’ve selected a style and theme, be realistic about how long your child will be likely to be interested in it. If it’s the kind of theme that isn’t likely to last, it may make more sense to skip the more expensive Pottery Barn kids bedding and go for a cheaper version.

But if it’s something that your child is likely to be interested in for a few years, choose a more expensive, higher quality bedding set that will wear well over years of use.

There’s a lot of gear out there for babies these days, but crib bedding is a nursery piece you obviously can’t pass up.

The good news is that there are an endless number of styles available to suit any nursery.

Whether your tastes run towards bargain or luxury styles, classic or modern, the bedding you choose will be an integral part of your baby’s nursery.

Follow these tips to select the perfect baby crib bedding.

Safety Issues Related to Crib Bedding

Some research suggests that improper crib bedding can cause SIDS, so it’s absolutely important to make sure that you choose bedding that will be safe for your baby.

It may be tempting to buy the cute comforters and coordinating stuffed animals that you see in the stores, but these are unsafe for newborns and should not be used until the baby can lift his head and roll over on his own.

Make sure that the bedding fits snugly on the crib. Most baby crib bedding comes in standard sizes and should fit your mattress, but double check to make sure. Loose bedding can come off and harm your baby.

Style Choices

The first step in choosing crib bedding is to decide if you’d like to buy each piece separately or purchase everything in a crib bedding set. Crib bedding sets can be more convenient, but they may include pieces that you don’t want or need.

Also, if you plan to have a baby shower and register for gifts, you may want to select separates to insure that your guests can afford to buy them! Of course, if you select separates, make sure that all of the pieces that you want are available in your desired pattern.

Whatever fabric you choose, look for two key factors: washability and softness. Steer away from fancy fabrics that won’t hold up after repeated washing, because you’ll definitely be washing them often.

And make sure to avoid scratchy fabrics that will irritate your baby’s sensitive skin. If extremely sensitive skin runs in your family, consider buying organic crib bedding.

Girl Crib Bedding Ideas

Most girl crib bedding comes in shades of pink but consider other options too. All white bedding sets are very cute; however, stains can be a problem. Lavender or pale yellow are some other good color choices if you don’t like pink. Or stick with pink but avoid the pastels and choose a brighter hue.

Some bedding themes that are suitable for girls include:

Princess or fairy – Princess and fairy patterns are incredibly big for girls and probably always will be. Consider whether you want to go for a fairy tale look with lots of pastels or a brightly-colored Disney princess vibe.

Paris – For the well-traveled tyke, consider pretty pink Parisian décor. Pink-striped bedding would be a good choice for this room, accented with stuffed poodles and pictures of the Eiffel Tower.

Flower garden – Look for crib sheets in flower-prints or striped pastels. Consider flower stencils on the walls.

Boy Crib Bedding Ideas

When it comes to boy crib bedding, most parents look for shades of blue and green. Also consider rooms in tans or browns for something a little different. Yellow is also neutral enough, and it makes for a terrific accent color with any of the above colors.

Some bedding themes that are suitable for boys include:

Military base – Choose bedding with red, white, and blue designs or camouflage. Decorate with GI Joes and toy helicopters.

Nautical theme – The nautical theme is another red, white, and blue bedding choice. Look for ship or flag prints for the bedding, and decorate with toy boats.

Sports – If daddy is a sports nut, it’s not too early to get baby interested. Choose bedding in the colors of daddy’s favorite team, or go for a more general theme and look for prints with basketballs, soccer balls, and footballs.

Crib Bedding Ideas for Mystery Babies

Some parents prefer not to find out the gender of their baby until the birth, but that can make outfitting the nursery a little more difficult. Generally, these nurseries are done in gender-neutral colors like yellow and green to make them suitable for both boys and girls.

Another possibility is to paint the nursery in neutral colors and purchase two bedding sets: one in a theme suitable for a boy and the other suitable for a girl. Leave them in the package until the day arrives, and while mom and baby are still in the hospital, dad or a helpful family member can open the correct package and return the other.

Some bedding themes that are suitable for mystery babies include:

Anything nature related – Look for patterns with stars and moons, trees, or the four seasons. Consider a wall mural with a nature scene to coordinate with the bedding.

The ocean – Think fish patterns, waves, and lobsters. Use netting to hold toys (but keep it up high so that baby doesn’t get entangled).

Noah’s ark – Choose bedding with animal and/or boat patterns. Some bedding specifically comes in Noah’s ark patterns.

Decorating your kids room should be a fun and imaginative home decorating project. Choose a theme, color scheme and create a focal point for your child's room. We have plenty of ideas and photos for you to look at as you plan your kids' bedroom design.

Decorating your kids room can be one of the most fun home decorating projects you’ll find. Kids room decor should be about imagination and creativity; the sky … or the jungle, a castle, the sea or any of a hundred other realms of imagination … really is the limit!

Try to get your child involved in the project as much as possible, letting them help steer your selection of a theme, colors and design elements. To get your kids room decorating project started, we have assembled a number of ideas and tips to help inspire you.

Picking a Theme

What are your child’s interests? Begin by looking at your child’s favorite books and artwork for ideas. You know what your son or daughter likes to pretend play the most, so use that to get inspiration for your theme.

Then look in decorating magazines books and online to find photos and ideas on how to bring your theme to life. A good theme for your kids’ room will also help direct your choice of colors, patterns and decorating elements.

Always remember safety is an important part of any kids’ room decor. If you child is a restless sleeper, bunk beds may not be the best choice. Never use decorating elements that could cause your child to choke or sustain injuries.

Choosing a Color Scheme

Start by choosing the background color you’ll use to paint the walls and ceiling, your flooring material and borders. Choosing a primary fabric and pattern will help guide your efforts.

Choose fabrics, wallpaper and wallpaper border patterns to help reinforce your theme and color scheme. You will want to select a main print or pattern to set the overall tone of your kids’ room.

Select your accessories, fabrics, wall art and other design elements to coordinate and with the primary fabric pattern and colors.

By selecting complementary colors for all design elements, you can bring together all of the design elements that help support your theme.

It’s best to select one a common background color, even when using different prints in one room. You can select prints and patterns in different size scales, like a wallpaper border with large hearts and perhaps the same or a similar pattern with smaller hearts to use in fabrics or curtains for instance.

Creating affordable framed art is easy if you simply use artwork your child has created him or herself, or by clipping pictures from magazines or books.

Choosing a Focal Point and Design Elements

You’ll want to select a main focal point for your kids’ room decor. Often time, this may be the bed, but you could also use a wall mural or a display shelf as the main point of interest. Your focal point reinforces and sets the theme you have chosen.

Really use your imagination when planning and selecting decorative elements. If your son loves baseball, use team pennants on a wall or display an autographed baseball on the display shelf. You might have a wall mural of his favorite ballpark or player at bat!

Of course, you’ll also want to find bedding that coordinates with the theme and color palette. Hearts, flowers and dolls in pinks, purples and greens work well in most girls’ room color schemes, while red, yellow or blue tend to work well in a boy’s room.

Boys Room Themes

Boys play and pretend actively, often pretending to be grown up men, so themes like building, cars, the circus or other occupations can make good options.

Boys also tend to love the outdoors, animals and the sea.

Fire House Theme

Is your little boy intrigued with fire trucks and likes pretending to be a firefighter? Then maybe a fire house theme, complete with wooden fire truck bed is the right theme.

You could use red as the primary color, adding a fire truck pattern for wallpaper borders. White, yellow or blue will work well for coordinating colors.
A fire pole might make an interesting design element and adds a great play center. A fire captain’s helmet or fire hose could also work to add to your theme.

Animal Theme

Most boys love animals. If your son loves dogs, you will find a lot of great dog patterns for bedding, fabrics and wallpaper borders. Whether he loves German Shepherds, Collies or Labrador Retrievers, a dog room theme will provide plenty of imaginative options.

Maybe he’s more interested in bugs, jungle cats and big game animals or dinosaurs? What ever animal category he likes can make a great theme for your boys’ room.

Animals make an easy theme since you can use stuffed animals and artwork with out spending big bucks.

Castle Theme

Most boys love to pretend being the knight in shining armor. Faux paint, a nice wall mural and a valance for the window treatment can transform your boys’ room into a castle.

You could also decorate his bunk bed to look like a guard tower or put a knight in armor in a corner of the bedroom to give this theme an imaginative touch.

Nautical Theme

Sail boats, tug boats or racing boats are another source of imagination and pretend play for many boys. A ship’s bell, anchor or sailing ship wheel could make the perfect main pattern for your boy’s room nautical theme.

Blue is a natural primary color choice with this theme, while beige can bring a feeling of beach sand into the color scheme. A ship in a bottle would make a great accessory for his display shelf.

Girls Room Themes

Girls will often want to play house, dolls, be a princess or dress up. Hearts, flowers and horses can also be good girls’ room themes.

If your little girl, love Barbie dolls, that could be a great theme. Or, if horses are her thing, look for wallpaper patterns, fabrics and other design elements that could support a horse theme in her room.

Pastels, pinks, purples and other bright colors are popular choices for any girls’ room. An elaborate doll house, a vanity with mirror for make up or a tea table, chairs and tea set for her dolls to have a nice tea party can all make great options for a focal point in your girls room decor, letting you even mix themes a bit if desired, since dolls and princesses can go together!

Princess Theme

If your daughter is like my five-year-old girl, she probably loves the Disney princesses. This can make a great theme, complete with her favorite princess characters and accessories.

Girls love a canopy bed and you can use sheer fabrics to bring color and a touch of whimsy into her bedroom. Pillows and bedding are easy to do with a princess theme; you’ll find plenty of good patterns, fabrics and wallpaper borders.

Barbie Doll Theme

Barbie doll collections are another biggie with girls. If she loves Barbie, then this could be a natural theme for her room. You can get a Barbie living room set, a Barbie bed, make up desk with mirror and all the accoutrements for her Barbie room theme.

This is another theme that can be extended easily, since she may have other favorite dolls as well. Make a display shelf unit the focal point to display all her favorite dolls.

Hearts Theme

Hearts are a wonderful pattern to use in a girls room. If your daughter wants a hearts theme, start by picking a pattern and her favorite color. You could also combine this with other patterns like butterflies or lady bugs to mix things up a little.

Flowers Theme

Flowers are another great source of inspiration for your girls’ room theme. Whether she loves a particular type of flower, like daisies, roses or lilies, you can find any number of patterns, fabrics and wallpapers from which to choose. Color options are also wide open with a flowers theme.

Use white bedroom furniture and stencil her favorite flowers to add color and create your flowers theme. A lovely flower vase could feature some paper machete or other type of faux flowers your girl can craft herself for display.

For a retro look from the seventies, you could go with a bright flower pattern. If she likes a more muted color scheme, then pastel colors and appropriate flower pattern may be the right look.

You can have fun with your teen furniture. Teen bedroom furniture and teen bedroom design ideas that will help your kid love their own teen room decor!

Since your teen will soon grow into new phases and tire of whatever decor you and they select, it’s a good idea to try and recycle furnishings or find used stuff at garage sales and then refinish or otherwise redecorate items for your teenager’s bedroom.

You can take that old chest of drawers, desk or wood pedestal side table or old nursery-white nightstand and give it a new look with a faux finish or by painting it black, lime green or whatever color your teenager has selected to go with their funky teen room decor.

Making a teenager’s room an expression of their personality and interests doesn’t have to be a large budget project if you follow a few simple tips on how to make their room fun and interesting without spending a fortune.

Beds, Futons and Bedding

Futons can be a great, affordable bed choice for your teen’s room. Even if you just store a simple folding futon under the main bed for sleepovers, it will make a great addition.

Another way to give your teenager’s bed a new and cool look is to create a custom headboard. If they are into sports, perhaps a headboard made from plywood and painted to look like a basketball backboard, soccer goal or snowboard scene.

If your teenage daughter likes animal prints, you can easily cover a headboard with an inexpensive fabric in her favorite zebra stripe, cheetah or leopard pattern.

Of course, adding a comforter or bedspread and bed linens, pillows and blanket that match the bedroom’s theme, will complete her bed and since these are all items that must be replaced periodically anyway, you won’t have to worry about giving them away to the Goodwill next year or the year after when she decides that animal prints are out and shabby chic is suddenly in!

Comfy Chair Ideas

Chairs are another furniture element to consider for your teen’s bedroom. The more comfortable seating that is available, the more teenagers and their friends will want to spend relaxing and hanging out in the bedroom.

Bean bags like we all had as kids in the 70s are in again and these are cheap, comfortable and can be stored easily when not in use.

Take an old armchair or recliner and refinish it; if you are handy with a glue gun and staple gun, this is a project you can easily tackle yourself without spending a fortune.

Desks, Dressers and Nightstands

A desk is a very important piece of furniture for your teenager’s bedroom, since you want them to be comfortable when studying and doing homework. Be sure it has plenty of drawers to store school supplies and add a comfortable chair and work lamp.

Add a simple bookcase that matches the desk for books and display items like trophies, doll collections and other personal items your teen will want to proudly show off in his bedroom.

You can easily recycle old dressers and nightstands by refinishing them with faux paint, stenciling patterns that pull your design elements together cohesively.

Here’s a great and inexpensive tip; take any old table lamp and get a new shade for it. In my teenage boy’s room, we had splurged on a new Lazy Boy reclining chair and matching area rug with black background and cool jazz-inspired pattern. The theme really expresses his interests in music and his talents as a jazz musician.

So, we simply bought a swath of the same fabric as the chair and used our glue gun and staples to decorate the lampshade with the same fabric. Or, use a sheer fabric with funky pattern to throw interesting patterns of light on the walls and ceilings.

Window Treatments

Start with a good cellulose, aluminum, wooden or other type of window blind as your base; this piece can always be reused if you decide to change draperies or other more decorative components of your teen’s bedroom window treatment.

Use the same fabrics selected for the bedding to create decorative curtains, a valance or cornice to complete your window treatment. Then, later if your teenager’s tastes change, you can easily switch out these fabric coverings as needed.

Closet Organizers

Go to Target or your favorite home improvement store to find great deals on closet organizers. Shelving, plastic or wire frame baskets make an excellent way to keep clothing, toys and other items well organized in your teenager’s closet and help prevent the clutter and chaos of clothing that can quickly overtake any teen’s bedroom.

Area Rugs and Accent Pieces

You can complete your teen room furnishings by adding a nice area rug that matches bedding, window treatments and wall paint colors. These are also easily changed out or moved to another room in the house in the case that your teen later decides to change decors.

As with any room decor, adding accent pieces is the best way to finish your teen room design. Let them decide what accent pieces they want. It is usually easy to use their own personal items as accent pieces since this is a great way for them to make the bedroom their own and express who they want to be as a young adult.

Selecting and refinishing furniture for a teen’s bedroom can be a fun project that helps parents and teenagers bond and gives kids an opportunity to make their bedroom a space that they love and want to spend time in alone or with friends.

Sleek lines, neutral or earth tones and a minimalist design approach make contemporary bedroom furniture a popular choice for creating a relaxing bedroom decor.

If you want to give your bedroom a more working and functional theme, contemporary bedroom furniture does the job. This kind of furniture offers a sense of comfort but at the same time maintains a peaceful atmosphere.

Contemporary furniture as well gives an illusion and makes the bedroom look bigger, neat and uncluttered. Those who desire a quiet feeling for a relatively bustling environment may opt for contemporary bedroom furniture. You do not need to put so much attention on where to place the bed, or think about where the chairs are situated, where the television is, other than where they will become practical.

When choosing contemporary bedroom furniture, what you should consider is how much amount of space should be left in the middle of the room, so it would be easy for you to go to other places like the corridor, terrace or the bathroom.

Unlike other bedroom designs where the remaining space is occupied with accents, contemporary bedroom furniture retains a form of design dedicated to the space itself.

In a contemporary bedroom design, rectangular shapes are usually used to give depth to the room. This shape is seen to be highly effective, and at the same time elegant; thus taking away the emphasis for other decors.

When you speak of’ contemporary bedroom furniture, the styles and trends pertain to what are current. Your concept of contemporary bedroom furniture may come from modern, antique, ethnic, nature, technology, or just about anything under the sun; as long as it can give a blend of functionality and peace.

Contemporary bedroom furniture seeks to go beyond design boundaries with elegant shapes, without sacrificing comfort and urbanity. Contemporary bedroom furniture as well comes in different materials such as steel, chrome, wood, glass, and fabrics like cotton, jute, organic, polyester, wool, and natural latex foam, as contemporary style now plays with eco-friendly and organic themes.

Earth tones like brown and beige of all shades are commonly used as base color from which other contemporary bedroom furniture would be spawn out of. You may experiment on different shades of the same color to enhance depth and magnitude while still maintaining a cool feel to the bedroom.

Textures are also held of utmost importance in contemporary bedroom furniture. The proper blending of stone, glass and wood furnishings add to the dimensions of the bedroom, making it look and feel more spacious.

Neutral colors, embedded on elements of black and white are also common in contemporary bedroom furniture, especially when you find beauty in the collaboration of art and architecture. Finishing with a contemporary style means furnishing a bedroom with fewer pieces and focuses on sleek qualities based on empty spaces, functional furnishings and natural light.

Dimmed lighting has also become popular in contemporary bedroom furniture. It is used to highlight specific spaces while providing a dimmer, warmer glow on the floors. Wood furniture that is polished in natural tones or metal scraps finished in bold colors are also common accents in contemporary bedroom furniture. In addition, pieces made from synthetics can also be placed to enrich the style.

You may design your bed in a simple and casual manner for beds in contemporary bedroom furniture. This may not have to call for exhibit intricate patterns like traditional or period inspired furniture. Window covers are generally plain and monotone. Other bedroom sheets are mostly straight lined and are used for filtering light.

You can shop for contemporary bedroom furniture in various furniture galleries. Contemporary bedroom furniture has been a present fad because it gives you a very warm and relaxing feel. It is also designed to complement other bedroom design styles. Most contemporary furniture bedroom sets are made to be durable and long lasting. Apart from bedroom and mattress sets, contemporary bedroom furniture comprises of side tables and couches that offer convenience.

Pictures, lamps, end tables and other decorating items found in many homes are held to a minimum as contemporary bedroom furniture that values the presence of space.

Most contemporary bedroom furniture’s colors aim to add more light to the whole room, and not blending with the room’s monotone hues. Leather covers are highly recommended on couches with dark shades of blue and green. They add a punch on white stark bedroom walls.

The most elegant bedroom designs may incorporate antique bedroom furniture, which will make the room decor feel like a scene from your favorite past era!

Bedrooms look more elegant by adding antique bedroom furniture. This kind of furniture is usually in bold colors and intricate designs that boost the room’s confidence as a haven for the rich and famous.

Putting more focus on the furnishings and colors, antique bedroom furniture cares more about the room’s overall aesthetic value, rather than its functionality.

When you say ‘antique’, it generally pertains to furniture pieces that are over 100 years old. But at present, even vintage 20th century furnishings may now be called antique.

Antique bedroom furniture designs which were developed during the 18th century meanwhile consists of certain designs that belonged to a nation’s style such as Palladianism in Great Britain, and Rococo in France, and these designs depict grace, opulence, playfulness, and gaiety.

Baroque on the other hand is another antique design pattern which dwelt more on heavier looks and darker shades. In the 19th century, gothic design became popular.

Antique Hardwood Furnishings

Antique bedroom furniture is commonly made up of fine hardwood like mahogany, engraved with carved designs, and it is used to be owned by rich and wealthy personalities during their time. Other antique bedroom furniture from the US is made from wood, iron, steel, and aluminum, and was covered with animal skins like those of sharks and zebras. These covers feature bold zigzag, stepped forms and curves, chevron patterns and sunburst motif.

Some antique bedroom furniture meanwhile have designs inspired by natural beauty, embossing pictures of grass and seaweed, as well as with curved lines and floral shapes. Some antique owners prefer works made from elm wood with lacquer carvings from China.

Beds with elaborately draped tall posts are usually the symbol of antique bedroom furniture. They are usually covered by curtains which were hung from a cord pegged to the ceiling with either hooks or rings.

Fabrics to Match Your Antique Bedroom Furniture

Curtains and window treatments hold an important part in antique bedroom furniture as they were used to hold ultimate privacy for the bedroom’s master. The bed is the most complicated piece in antique bedroom furniture. It consists not only of the mattress, but also of hangings – which include a canopy cloth to enclose the top of the bed frame.

The head cloth is hung on the wall to keep the bed warm, while the head and foot curtains could be pulled around to enclose the bed. The valances and dust ruffles also take part of the bed’s overall grandeur. The bed should as well be dressed with canopies, lots of bold-colored pillows, ribbons and other trimmings in shades of gold.

Let There Be Light

It is important that you get the right lighting right in decorating an antique styled bedroom. Given that antique bedroom furniture deals more on the beauty of the room, light should be made to put the spotlight on the furniture.

Lampshades used in antique bedroom furniture include the classic ginger-jar style night stands, and those that are made from brass, crystal or china. Candlestick holders are also a good accent especially when they have been transformed as lampshades. Under each lamp, there must be a crocheted doily or tassel for a more authentic look.

Antique Dressers and Night Tables

Other antique bedroom furniture consists of tables, cabinets and chest drawers. It is important to place a table or cabinet in the bedroom complimented with a bamboo nightstand. Dressers meanwhile are typically made from either dark oak or walnut and embellished with carvings with attached ornate brass or wooden pulls. The most glamorous dressers also have a candle stand, and a tilting mirror on top of them.

The windows must be dressed with full curtains having ruffles, braids, lace, bows and tassels on them. The materials normally used in window dressings are of velvet, and brocade, which are then layered with lace or silk.

Flooring and Antique Bedroom Accessories

Finally, to fully accentuate the antique bedroom furniture, the flooring should be dressed up too. Oriental rugs and carpets add a more appealing look, completing the antique theme of the entire room’s space.

You may buy antique bedroom furniture in auctions and antique shops, especially original ones, but they usually cost very expensive. Furniture makers have now came up with antique replacements, and they give the same effect as well.

If you are feeling lucky, try shopping at garage sales and see if you can purchase cheaper finds.

The bedroom decor is often overlooked.

After all, most homeowners are more concerned about getting the decor in the rest of the house just right, and neglect their own bedroom.

It’s easier to fall asleep if the master bedroom is calm, clean and put together.

It also helps in the romance department if the room is a little getaway from everyday life.

Choose calm colors for the room. Blues, greens and tans are colors that soothe the eyes and mind and are very easy to compliment with colors on bedspreads and accessories.

If the walls are blue, a brown or pristine white bedspread looks nice. Tan walls give a clean slate as almost any color coordinates with tan.

Do not put too many things on the walls or shelves. Keep the decorations simple with only a few pictures on the walls or a few floating shelves with only one vase on each of them.

Display knick-knacks in a spare room or somewhere else but retain a few sentimental items in your bedroom decor.

Don’t underestimate the candle factor. Candles are romantic because they elicit the feeling of warmth and sensuality. Romance comes in two forms with candles; appearance and scent. A few scented candles or a candle in a small, crystal bowl surrounded by rose petals is a great way to see the romance.

A comfortable bed is key, but a comfortable looking bed is also important to the bedroom decor. Down comforters, or even a down alternative, are extremely fluffy and just beg to be laid on. They are more of a winter blanket but in the hotter months they look just as nice folded at the end of the bed with crisp bright sheets underneath.

Curtains are also important to the feel of a room. Sheer curtains are great for bedroom decor, but if you are like me, you hate a bright room first thing in the morning! So room-darkening vertical blinds are paired with sheer curtains. The color should correspond with the bedspread or compliment the color of the walls.

Last but certainly not least is the topic of a television in the bedroom. There are studies stating that a television in the bedroom cuts a couple’s intimacy in half. I happen to be of the belief that if I am in my bedroom I am doing one of two things, neither of which involve the television. But, if you insist on having a TV in your room, put the television in an armoire. The television is still in the bedroom but it’s not a focal point.

Once your child becomes a teenager, that old “kids’ furniture” in their room becomes a real sore point as they want to express their individuality and do not wish to be considered a little kid in any way, shape or form.

Inevitably, there comes that day when your teenager declares “I hate my room. Why can’t I get new furniture and paint my walls the way all my friends’ rooms look?”

So, start by discussing what your teen wants. Use the project as an opportunity for your teenager to gain valuable budgeting and decorating skills while creating a more suitable space for them to express themselves.

Set a budget and help them learn how to manage a project within financial constraints. This will help prevent the inevitable desire to buy all new furniture and keep things realistic from the start and encourages them to think creatively in terms of how to stretch the budget.

Maybe your fifteen-year-old daughter wants a shabby chic bedroom with faded old chintz sofa and curtains. Or maybe she would prefer a retro look with bright colors and some of your old 70s album covers on the wall.

Is your son a sports fan or does he prefer music? Outgoing or more reserved? Answering these and other questions will give you a sense of what feel the room should have.

Perhaps your son wants his room to look like a basketball court or maybe graffiti is more his style. Regardless, it is important to remember that it’s their own space, and the decor needs to reflect their personality and desire to be independent.

You don’t always need to toss out their bed and furniture. Unless the furniture is completely broken, you can give it a cool new look by painting it and changing the drawer pulls. Helping your teen design their bedroom can be fun and with a little advance planning, probably won’t take more than a weekend.

Often, just rearranging furniture gives a room a whole new look. A teen room makeover may be accomplished with a new coat of paint, rearranging the furniture and adding some new accessories and lighting.

Painting can have the biggest impact for the least amount of money and sets the tone of your teen’s room design. Plus, with your help, painting is something they can easily do themselves.

Does your son, the skater, want to paint the walls black and put a black light on the ceiling? Black paint may be the worst choice – it might take several coats to refurbish his room in a few years – but you can always repaint relatively easily and inexpensively.

But, if having your son sleep in a dark cave really bugs you, try compromising to find something you both can live with comfortably.

A wainscoting, with solid black on the bottom and gray on the top could be the answer. Since it’s his room, let them be as creative as possible. If long as no walls are being demolished or holes punched out, give them room to let their individuality run free.

Another way to compromise on wall paint is to limit the way out, offensive colors to just one wall. Pastel pink may have been great when your daughter was ten, but she probably hates it as a fifteen-year-old. If she wants her room lime green with yellow and turquoise dots let her go for it. After all, nobody told you what color you could paint your living room.

Paint the dresser and desk to match the theme if new furniture is not in the budget. Painting furniture and changing drawer pulls can go a long way to making up for not getting a whole new bedroom set.

Buy inexpensive shelving, or, if you’re handy, build shelves to help keep stuff that otherwise ends up on the floor looking neat and organized. Projects like this can be a great way to bond with your teenager too!

Bedding is another thing to consider. Shop around on the Internet and you can find retailers like BeddingStyle.com that offer sale & clearance prices on brand name bedding. Many discount department stores like Target have pretty hip furnishings and accessories available at great prices.

Bedding is another very personal choice for your teenager. He might want an animal print bedspread or something in black velvet. Or she might like retro 70’s bright flowers on her sheets. This is a great way to add color and personality to a room without making any permanent changes to the walls.

Adding accents will give the room more interest and personality. A few fun ideas for accent items include funky chairs, pillows, area rugs and wall art. This is where your teenager can really make the bedroom an expression of his or her personality so encourage them to pick things they are really into.

The bedroom is the space that we spend the most time in.

Like it or not, we need to sleep to be able to function.

This is why making your bedroom design a place of personal serenity and rejuvenation is so common in decorating!

Sometimes it only takes a simple idea to get your creative juices flowing. Browse through photos of bedrooms you like online or in magazines.

Look for common denominators. Do they all have bright paint? Or more subdued tones? Do they all have four poster beds with romantic canopies or more traditional sleigh beds?

Once you can identify what you like in a bedroom, coming up with your own bedroom design is easier!

Some Bedroom color ideas show how amazingly different a room can look with a fresh coat of paint in a modern or trendy color, or how to use color to change the perceived space. Interior design can bring out the best in a bedroom space.

Using interior design ideas for your bedroom can make your nights feel indulgent and enjoy your well-deserved sleep in a stylish bedroom of simple silk elegance or a country haven of flounced floral.

It all comes down to personal taste, but never fear, there are enough bedroom interior design ideas for everyone to create their own unique style.

If you cannot afford an entire new bedroom design, complete with furniture, painting the room and purchasing new window treatments and bed coverings will often do the trick.

Creative souls can make new headboards from plywood, and with some cotton batting and fabric, create a custom made headboard at a fraction of the price of a new one.
